Maybe Snoke is what is calling Baylen and they make a ill-fated attempt to make Snoke look like a real villain, eventually taking out Baylen, Thrawn and Shin?
I'm not even sure that could fix the sequels.

That would be super lame seeing as how Snoke was a chump.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I'm intrigued with elements of the story but they're wasting a ton of time on action sequences. I don't see how this can be wrapped up nicely in just one episode.

Really? They pile everyone onto the Chimaera, get into the Hyperspace ring-thingy, hit the levers and BOOM!!! Whole thing explodes.
Fade to black.
Aaaaand Credits.
And thats how you circumvent a Writer's strike!

Action isn't always a waste. But in this case they're wasting it on pointless action where there is no consequence or outcome that pushes the plot forward.
Essentially just playing action figures with the characters.
Whoever directed the episode shouldn't be given another in the future. That episode was way too Disney and it took me out of what was previously an immersive story that felt like it was going somewhere.
Now they have some damage control to do to get back on track, and have to finish the season with a splash within the course of an hour.
Can they move things at the pace required to make that happen? Given the pace so far it seems unlikely.
Probably a slow crawl culminating in a maddening cliffhanger that brings up more questions than answers.
The 2+ year wait will just piss people off.
The future of the show will also suffer greatly from losing Ray.

True, but my question is...does Baylan die in the next episode or...do they consider recasting him so the character can continue?

I really hope that they don't recast Baylan. This is a really nice legacy for Ray and he's done a brilliant job of it.
I hope the ultimate evil is not Snoke, especially after they red shirted him and then crammed him in a jar and made him Palpatine in a desperate last minute fan service.
I expect that we will see Thrawn return to the GFFA at the end of the episode and the last scene we will see is him talking to the leaders of the Imperial Remnant and then one of the figures steps out of the shadows and its that annoying Senator that's clearly an Imperial spy, and Thrawn demands their allegiance and their ships. Then when they scoff at him and his battered Star Destroyers we see the coffins on the flight deck open to reveal undead storm troopers.

Unfortunately, I think killing him cuts off too many stories at the half way. I loathe recasting (as discussed in the Witcher thread), but this a bit like Henry Cavill quitting. You can't keep doing the show without such a key character. I also pity anyone that tries to follow Ray.

I agree with your point that it cuts off the story too soon, but I dont share your loathing of re-casting except when its done clumsily.
I think they could do it tactfully. The character of Baylan is the one who is actually doing something interesting, its too soon to end his arc.

I think the only way this works is that he finds this evil and frees it, and finds out he was wrong and can't control it and tries to put the genie back in the bottle and Shin kills him. Then he can die a bit of a hero.
But iirc he died after filming so they'll probably recast him with Pauly Shore taking his place.
I tend to think that Thrawn and Shin will be the big bads next year. Thrawn on the physical layer fighting Hera and the weak New Republic, and Shin and Ashoka on the meta physical force level.

This show feels like what happens when you give the live action reigns to people who have made middling children's cartoons. Consequence free, and lacking in complexity and depth.
Wish it was otherwise, but it lands slighly better than Boba Fett in terms of plot, and the lowest in terms of action of... well... anything I suppose.

Yeah...so far most of this show doesnt make any sense.
Its also like...if we knew it was a setup for something bigger then maybe? But at the moment we're guessing at 'if' there is something bigger and what that might be.
But frankly, nothing about this show has me craving for 'more.'
The characters are flat and largely suck, their motivations are....'irrational at best?'
Ahsoka has been 'hunting' Thrawn? Why? Without Sabine being an idiot with the metal ball thingy he was stuck. Sure they built that hyperspace ring thingy but without the directions they were boned.
Sabine MUST find Ezra Bridger. Why? Thrawn must kill Ezra Bridger!! Why?
Dude is chilling in his Hobo Hut travelling the rails with his rock-chucking shelly homies. He isnt a danger to anyone.
