Well Edwards & Co. had to sign off, obviously. But yes, I think he was tasked as such.

It would be weird to be both a candidate and evaluator.

The title “advisor “ is kind of weird for Iginla. I think of that as more of a mentor who has done the job but doesn’t want to be FT anymore, so they’re providing sage counsel. As opposed to someone learning the ropes.
Regardless, I hope this works.

I also don't know why a team can't be high-scoring, skilled, and fast, but while also being a tough team to play against. Two seasons ago, the Flames had one of their best regular seasons on record, and they were the most 'scary' in a very long time.
The '89 Flames were very skilled, but as a group, they were very tough. The '04 team wasn't that highly skilled top to bottom, but they were very fast and very scary. I get that we all get tired of not having enough skill, but I do believe a balanced lineup can include a nice mix of skill, speed and toughness on a team that competes in a physical sport.
|
I think fighting especially staged fighting is dumb.
You can have physical players but they have to be able to play 5 on 5 not just for intimidation.
Also the league is different now. It's a fast league and as skilled as it's ever been. Being tough to play against can mean many different things but being able to score in all situations and defend well is what I think about.
Do anyone of the teams left have a guy strickly to fight?

I think it's a token position to get him back in the organization this seasons as he finishes his coaching duties.
They probably have a plan for him after that.
It also sounds like he wants to be here.

Well I was not saying that happened at the same time. I imagine Conroy was told he would be the GM and then shown Nonis's interview.

I think it would be a placeholder/part-time title while he coaches his son for one more year. And then he would have a more clear full-time role next off-season.

It's probably a place holder thing. He may not be ready to join the team this year, but they want him in the future. By getting him under contract now, they basically reserve him and prevent other teams from snagging him.
Edit, what Jiri said.

Just to play Devil's advocate. keep in mind that Sakic was a part of a team that had sustained championship level success. Conroy has been a part of a team that has never been better than mediocre.
Another point is that Sakic was GM of a team that had MacKinnon on it and was the worst team EVER. From that season they drafted the best D man in the NHL. The Avs are a good team mostly because they drafted in the top 10 so many times. They have what 3 first over all picks on their team and another 4th over all.
Of course give Conroy enough times and maybe we can draft a couple of first over alls. I have a hard time seeing him blow things up for a rebuild though.

Being a somewhat recent player might be an advantage. I hope this works out, he seems like a happy, confident and positive glass half full type of guy. GFG

Possibly seeing Iggy around at games would be cool!

Generally not a fan of bringing back the old boys club, but if any team could use a shot in the arm and rebuild some goodwill, it's us with Iginla

I've seen it many times in the professional, non-sports world and these sorts of people are not easy to find and they make teams better and happier, full stop.

To quote one of my posts when Treliving's departure was announced, it's very important to have empathetic people in management who see everyone in the organization as more than just a piece of some puzzle. IMO, leaders who understand that are a crucial element in building out the culture of teams. Funny guy aside, Conroy has also shown in interviews over the last 9 years when talking about NHLers and kids, that he also cares about the human, non-athlete side of the players and it makes me very happy to see him get promoted to GM. Good things happen to good people and Conroy will be a big reason the dark clouds around this past season, Sutter, etc. are shooed away. Kudos to the decision makers (Maloney, Edwards, etc.) on making the right choice here, IMO.

I'd like to make note that when the Pulers brought in their old boys club they all had arrogance and the delusional idea that their cup rings meant they knew what they were doing. It's was doomed from the start.
Whereas here in CGY, these Flames greats all still have something to prove, to themselves. To land the title here, to win it all. These guys may not be able to bring their hunger to the ice but they'll bring it to the job of building a team to get there. At least that's the idea brewing in my brain.
You say old boys, I say hungry execs.
