Yeah Monahan's first presser (assuming he ever does one?) is going to be must see TV, he is going to get eviscerated.

^^ Why would he agree to be CEO of this new venture then? He's a terrible person, he just wanted to protect his job more than anything. Unless the players can somehow force him out, I imagine he stays on.

Why 72 holes?
The OWGR already gives points to tours that only play 54. LIV was getting ranking points with or without the merger.

Have we not learned anything today? I mean, I hope we already knew this, but money wins. Monahan will flash the cash to the players who matter and that will be that. Until fans actually show the spine to stop watching these sports why would anything change?

The guys who are sitting around ~100 on the FedEx points list are about to get royally screwed. One could argue that they would have been fringe players had LIV never been a thing, but I doubt they will see it that way.

Oh no doubt. Regardless how this ended, PGA wins or LIV wins, the guarantee from all of this was the richest players would get richer, and almost everyone else, including the fans, would come out of this worse.

I have appreciated Mcilroy’s stance on things up to this point, and hoping he doubles down here. I think he will be respected more if does so. That said, he could very likely take the easy way and say it is the right move for the world of golf etc etc. His response is very anticipated regardless.

I wouldn’t be shocked that he already knew this was in the works based on his behaviour the last few months.

Believe it or not, it seems that nearly all of them learned at the same time as everyone else -- when CNBC published a short statement on its website, followed by a news release on the PGA Tour's website shortly after 10 a.m. ET.
Players weren't happy about being kept in the dark. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and members of the Player Advisory Council didn't even know what was taking place behind the scenes.

These guys have to be absolutely furious and reeling. Like a right hand to the jaw from prime Mike Tyson reeling.
Fascinating stuff and really curious to see what the fall out is moving forward.
The Saudis own golf......oof.

Pretty shocking news but I think from a fans perspective its going to be great. I don't know the details but would only assume that we will see some incredibly deep fields playing some tournaments in some pretty awesome locations. Seeing PGA Tour pros play the the tour mostly in North America with some random WGC events was okay but hopefully seeing some more tour events all over the world will be really cool.
I think all of the Saudi talk is interesting. Everyone wants to blast the Tour and golf for selling out to the Saudis but the last time I checked the US economy has some pretty strong ties to SA. Canada does as well. Seems odd to me that people work the SA thing into it as much as they do. I know Monahan used it as a talking point only to go back on his word but he has willingly sacrificed his integrity.

And it looks like Mcilroy is taking the conciliatory approach. He is probably relieved that he is no longer the main voice of LIV opposition, among the players anyway. He probably got in over his head on this battle and just wants it over with. I'm a little disappointed in this, but oh well.
Quote:
With a day to reflect, McIlroy said that he ultimately believes that having the Saudis’ deep pockets pouring money into the Tour is “good for the professional game.” He said that it unifies the sport after a divisive 18 months, and with the PIF now the exclusive investor in the new entity, it secures the Tour’s financial future.
|
Quote:
“Whether you like it or not, the PIF were going to keep spending money in golf. At least the PGA Tour now controls how that money is spent.
“So, if you’re thinking about one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world, would you rather have them as a partner or an enemy? At the end of the day, money talks, and you’d rather have them as a partner.”

I’ve read those articles but there’s a lot of talk now that mcilroy may not have known the specifics but that something was coming. Hence the sudden silence.
Furious maybe for the surprise. But it’s going to be better for the big guys so the anger will quickly subside. Mcilroy said as much today.

Definitely a surprise.
What isn't was that LIV vs PGA rivalry was at some point going to end, whether the Saudi's decides that their experiment to try and take over golf was done and they move onto buying something else in the sporting world, or, I guess this.
And I think many of the players defecting knew this...at some point they make it back to a unified tour, but in the mean time they have cleaned up with tens in millions of signing fees.
