He can still sign a long-term deal with a new team before arbitration. The Flames were offered the 2nd overall pick for him two weeks ago.
I don't think they'll get that kind of value, but the return should be big.

Well I agree with the poster. We have a government that has no fiscal responsibility and is ruining the country through bad policy.
We are not irrelevant and the country does have a dwindling reputation.

That said the US/UK/EU are also not happy places to live at the moment.

Just curious. Is this talk of Canada going down the crapper really widespread in Britain? I was born there and have family still there and I've had some weird messages out of the blue from my aunt who rarely ever messages me, asking how we are doing like we're in the Ukraine or something.

Family not being able to cross the border was the issue. I really doubt will happen again, but in Gaudreau's instance, if borders were closed neither her nor family could travel to visit baby. Which isn't an ideal family scenario.

Rupert Murdoch controls a bunch of the media there. They give out their ridiculous 1/2 truths and I'm sure people buy that we are all locked in our houses with armed guards making sure we don't move or that the freedom convoy is prepared to take over the government, etc.
We've got Postmedia here which isn't nearly as ridiculous and it still gets people off their rockers.

Both Tkachuk and Gaudreau are city boys. I can't see either going hiking in the middle of the Calgary winter. There are some players who specifically pursue the more outdoor activities....just not these guys.

Brits giving lectures about the state of our political situation or being a nation with a reputational decline is just hilarious to me. Brexit, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Scottish independence, Northern Ireland...they live in a state of perpetual political instability.

Bold of you to think Canadians want to play in Canada

It just depends where in the US. Like any country, some places are much more livable than others. I couldn't live in the Southern US. For me that's not my vibe at all. I lived in Alberta for 24 years (Calgary was 5 years or so of that timeline). I've lived in California for the past 12 years. Certain things that can't even be controlled that are a big difference is the weather. The weather where I live in California is pleasant all year around. In the entire week there might be 2 weeks where it gets really hot. That versus 5 months or so of cold weather takes a toll.
When I lived in Canada I absolutely loved it and I will always be Canadian forever. But when you move to or grow up in a place like California, and then you go back to Alberta you see the difference, and I'm not surprised players want to leave. I'm not knocking Alberta, it's my home and I grew up there. But there is just a lot more opportunity here, things to do, etc and as aforementioned the weather. No question as you mentioned in certain parts of the country gun control or no scenery is there. That's why I picked where I did. Places like Detroit, etc there is a lot of crime per capita and overall it's just depressing in my opinion to be there. Every country has it's flaws and areas that might not be for everyone.
Honestly at the end of the day there is no right or wrong. People just need to be where they feel the most comfortable. It's a preference thing.

A trade is probably the best move for the Flames long term. But they have to commit to a rebuild and not just muddle along trying to contend with non-contending roster.

So just couldn't catch up with this monster topic.
Did we land on no downside for electing to take him to arbitration?
Avoids him taking the QO on Friday and buys them more time to trade him without a short term deadline? (Or negotiate a long term contract if you think there's still a chance)
Saw a lot of negative comments early in the topic but didn't want to reply 24 hours after the fact.

I know it might surprise some people on here, but yes the UK still follows what is happening in Canada with interest, you are and I hope will continue to be allies and friends. I am only saying what is being said in the news and in the media. Our PM has proven to be a liar and a rule breaker but at least the Party has got rid of him. Your PM seems to be just as bad plus throw in very authortarian and yet he keeps getting voted back in. Anyhow, when things are not going well in the world it is not un usual for people to head home and that is what I was trying to point out.

Ok, I just seem to remember him whiffing on a few things but if Steinberg is also saying it that is too much smoke.

I think 0 downside to your point.
But another data point that points to maybe a trade will be how this situation ends being more likely, which is making people sad Pandas. Understandably so.

I think the return on Tkachuk will be good. Ritch Winter, Mangiapane's agent, was openly speculating on potential returns on air with Francis yesterday, oddly enough. Mention of a Debrincat type or young top defenseman.
