I don't think "good value" and "small market" or even "Canadian market" will be in the same sentence today at all.

Pretty easy to predict where your team is going next season when you're in the running for a bottom 6 player sweepstakes.

so barring any trades, this is the only way to improve the team so prepare yourselves.
I like Coleman and think he improves the team (even if just a bit) and I will let Tre and the rest of them deal with the money issues....not my money.

I'd like to see what Coleman can do with an increased role and some more ice time.

I like Blake Coleman up to $4.5M a season (would prefer sub $4M), but anything more and I'm not a fan. $100,000 a point seems like a good spend. I'll give a little more for intangibles.

Yeah I really like the player a lot.

But if you are getting him today, its just going to be to much money and worse, 2 years to much in term.

As I said I think all of these players are going to come down to two prices.

Where I want to go (5-10 teams) 4 x $4.5
Where I could stomach going (15 teams) 4 x $5
Where I'd prefer not to go (5-7 teams) 5 x $5.5

Calgary won't be in either of the first two groups.

I'd give him some term in favor of a lower cap hit. I think he can be valuable player even when the scoring dries up. I figure he's a $3.75M player over a six year contract. I'd go $4M over five, of $4.5 over four. Anything more than that is likely to be a bad contract.

If we're outbidding big American markets on free agent day, the contract is going to be brutal.

Maybe I'm overly naive, but I'm just not ready to buy in that players hate playing in Canada so much that Canadian teams have to overpay for all of their players. In a salary cap league no less.

I really want to start trash talking the Hyman deal, so I need closure on this Coleman thing.

I would try to build through the draft if I thought it was harder to get UFA’s to come to Calgary.

Well he wants to sign in Dallas but i haven't heard them mentioned at all. No way Boston was going to give him 5 per year either, because they simply wont have the room to do so after re-upping Debrusk, McAvoy and signing 2 goaltenders.
So perhaps the Flames can get him at 5 per...but the term will be the killer.

The Flames are building through the draft...they just picked 8 guys a few days ago as an example.

Then they supplement through FA and hopefully trades that address current shortcomings.

I was listening to The Point on NHL radio yesterday and they seem to believe that Coleman is going to sign in Dallas.
