Does the sun going down at 430 vs 530 really make much of a difference in how people live their lives in the winter? I doubt there is any appreciable difference in how active people are.

Even in the summer, except for things like golf, it’s mostly BS. No one doesn’t go out for supper or go for a walk or whatever just because it’s dark at 9 instead of 10. It certainly doesn’t affect people who live closer to the equator.

There’s nothing wrong with people wanting to get off work when it’s light out. I don’t know why they don’t just say that. But they aren’t more active in that extra hour.
For me it's the mental aspect of it.

Sun goes down and I subconisously start to wind down and get ready for sleep.

I get energy off the sunlight and heat. Cold weather and dark evenings drain me.

So am I outside for that 'extra hour' maybe not. But am I awake and productive during that 'extra hour'? Yes, I am.

The other day my wife asked if I could run to Walmart for her. I told her I'm already in my pyjamas, exhausted and ready for bed. We checked the time... 6:30. That doesn't happen in the summer haha.

That’s a byproduct of living so far north. Plus it’d be dark at 630 no matter what. The time change has nothing to do with it.

And that’s my whole point. There are all these things we attribute to the time change that are actually just seasonal and due to our latitude.

If it wasn't for people complaining about it I wouldn't have even noticed the time change. Doesn't affect my life one bit

Even technology that is supposed to make life easier does not always work. I don't drive my car very often but it has all sort of connectivity and it has a feature, which I've enabled, that is auto time zone and DST but on my first drive today following the time change it had not been updated. I gave it some time to update automatically but it wasn't interested. I had to go into the settings and manually adjust it an hour back like some 20th century simpleton.

The problem with these debates is when we focus too much on the extremes (solstices) and not enough on the in between. As I type this at 440pm 6 weeks between both equinox and solstice, most of the city has effectively entered twilight (sun may not have officially set, but it's not visible anymore if there is the slightest obstruction).

December is basically just ####ed no matter what. October was fine...November now sucks and so will Jan/Feb/March. Could Feb be more like October?

I'm on team evening light, but the sensible compromise if every jurisdiction can get on board is to go in the middle: UTC-6:30.

Fair enough. I can only speak for myself, who lives alone with way too much time on my hands after work, but I always go for an hour or two walk once I get home from work (certainly not during this deep freeze week though). When it's already black out like this, I feel forced to stick to the same main, well lit area, as opposed to the usual exploring sessions I like to do. And it frankly just feels depressing when you leave work and it's already dark.

I think the other part is what's already been mentioned from the other side, with those who prefer the morning light: how it affects my mentals. I'm a nighthawk so am a sleepy person in the morning, I find the darkness much more manageable than the bright sun hitting you first thing in the morning, I actually find that intrusive when I'm still waking up. I can feel the mental dip leaving work when it's already dark outside and I'm finally free. That's just my thoughts on it.

No one hates the fall time change more than dogs with scheduled eating times. The pup is flipping out over it only being 6pm and not 7

Do you think it could be the abruptness of it that cause confusion. Your body was used to going to sleep at a certain light condition so now it’s still used to that. If instead you were always on this time were your body be retrained?

I have the reverse affect in the morning where it feels like a huge boost with the morning light for the week or so after change.

My dog scratched my leg tonight because she hasn't been fed yet, cats will scratch your leg because it's Tuesday. Win for dogs.

You don't need to change the clocks in your car? What is this magic you speak of?

I dunno? Maybe? Perhaps I just yearn for 9:30pm sunsets and 20°C+ weather

I used to have a car that would not only change its clock for daylight saving but also if I drove to a different timezone, it would automatically change. Sorcery!

We had a 2006 Odyssey that could do this, but couldn't figure out the update to DST dates. Crazy that they can embed GSP that would adjust the time, but couldn't force an update for which week to change the clock.

So we had a couple week/year with wrong time.

Yeah, I like variety and I'll take both 4:30pm sunsets and 11pm. But my god, i got my driver's license back about a year ago and I'm not allowed to drive when it's dark. That alone drops winter, and DLS down like 90 points on the Suck-O-Meter.
