McDavid authors a play for the Ages! Oilers 3, Blackhawks 4

Connor McDavid is Canadian, Leon Draisaitl is German, tragedies are Greek, and Dreams of a Puck on a Midsummer Night are Shakespearian. And while Shakespeare is the Bard among playwrights, no less a dramatist is Connor McDavid; the NHL’s undauntable warrior poet.

With a lyrical stride and mellifluous stick looping and swirling the puck across the ice just as quill and ink of old composed humanity’s greatest epics, on Wednesday night McDavid (1g, 0a, 1 pt, +1) led the Oilers in their quest to slay the giant that is the Blackhawks; a modern-day Gilgamesh setting out to fell the goliath Humbaba once more. Alas, the Fates cast naught but woe for the Oilers as Blackhawks’ forward Jonathon Toews scored with 1:16 left in the third period, to cut the gordian knot that was a 3-3 tie. The McDavid faithful took the twist ending hard; their only succor to be found at the apex of Edmonton art and culture: a downtown drive-in beer garden set up in an empty lot.

Sitting in an un-airconditioned, Ford F-150 littered with empty cans of Labatt Wildcat, sexagenarian sisters Bernice and Bethany Bevilacqua summed up game 3 of the Oilers-Blackhawks qualifier series in the unvarnished vernacular of their people, “Jesus Christ. They really should have put some port-a-johns around here. You take the wheel Berny, I’m going to crash out in back.”

Offering a more sober take was thinking-man’s Oilers fan, Bruce Buckminster. “There’s something eerily familiar about all of the this,” said Buckminster. “The Oilers sinking like a bunch of submarines…a hotel connected to shops, restaurants, and a hockey rink…women sleeping in trucks like they are beds…Ho. Ly. Sh**. We’re all in the god-damned West Edmonton Mall!”

Before Buckminster could continue, he was interrupted as Bernice Bevilacqua pulled around. “You’re damn right, now how about a trip to Fantasyland?” “Those dentures?” replied Buckminster. “Nevermind, surprise me.”

Witness to the tawdry scene was Oilers deadline acquisition, and former Redwing, Andreas Athanasiou who, long after the game had ended, stood staring through the fence enclosing the NHL’s quarantine bubble. Whispered, Athanasiou, into the hot summer night’s air,
“I recall my days as free as that,
to skate and to score points;
This heat, that smell, these deluded fans,
Have me longing for Detroit.

I live, I find, in this bubble,
A tale no man should be cursed to remember;
An Oiler, though, I should not mind,
We’ll be out long before September.
The Oilers square off against the Blackhawks in the first elimination game of their series on Friday, August 7, at 6:45p.m. ET.

That’s crazy to see McDavid response to Kassian. What a poor leader. The guy just has zero personality.

I don't think McDavid says anything about Kassian there.

Kassian is still garbage though.

Either way, likely referring to Kassian.
It looked kinda like, "F those/you guys" to me.

Still could be referencing Kassian.

McDavid was (a) right about Kassian essentially pretending to block but doing nothing and (b) such a hypocrite - has he even brought in his life blocked a shot?

Crosby would catch it with his teeth and turn it up for a breakaway goal.

I think the losing is getting to him. If the Oilers don't get out of the qualifying round I wonder if we start hearing whispers about him maybe wanting out. It's not like there's going to be significant roster upgrades next season as they only have about $10 million in projected cap space.

It is hilarious that the Oiler media, fans, and even their official twitter account are blaming the refs for the loss.

Meanwhile, both the tieing and winning goals last night were at even strength, and the result of terrible zone coverage.

Even better is the fact that the Chicago Blackhawks have scored more 5on5 goals (9) than any other team in the playoffs!

How can an entire team, fanbase, and media be so collectively unaware?

It's not even like the Hawks have looked great in this series. It's basically two teams that can't play defense throwing pucks on net.

If they lose they do have a 12.5% chance of picking 1st overall. It will be butt clench time.

10 million, and they need to sign/re-sign at least 5 players. Including Andreas Athanasiou who currently costs $3 million, and probably wants a raise

What you see its what you get with the Oilers for the foreseeable future

If Athanasioa gets $4M, a goalie gets $2M, and Ethan Bear gets $1.5M, that leaves $2.5M to add 3 players.

In other words, after re-signing Ath and Bear, they have room for 3 minimum wage roster plugs (give or take a few hundred thousand).

I know. As much as I want to see them miss the playoffs a 1/8 chance at 1st overall is terrifying as it seems like the hockey gods are messing with the NHL when it comes to the Oilers and the draft lottery.

No kidding.

Kassian is getting $3.2M a year for another four years after this, fall down in front of a goddamn slap shot in the post season like a good meat shield.

Don't forget the predictable sideways one for one trade that retains salary.
