Kinda scary to imagine if they did.
UCPers would be buying up Viking hats and storming the capital.

Probably 1500 lost jobs is less amusing than some of you really clever people think it is.

Their CEO telegraphed this move like a month ago. But it's a pretty deep cut and sucks a lot. Boom bust cycle will continue in Alberta.

Paging AHS… perhaps they could lose a few middle management positions and hire more nurses and doctors.

My face is a bum!

$4B burning a hole in their pocket for Surmont, then boom... 1500 nuked. I got so burned out by this crap that I left O&G forever. I'm sure I'm not alone.
All these companies that state "the most important thing is our people", yet you're in an industry where everyone produces the exact same thing. The most important thing is literally spending less on people.

It's important never to give your undying, unwavering loyalty to any company in O/G or any other industry. The minute they have to pinch pennies or change direction, you're going to get benchmarked for ROI. And 1500 jobs didn't have the ROI to keep them around.
Corporations will never pick you over their own operational success. Jobs are simply a means to an end.
By the way, tax cuts do not guarantee jobs. Not in an automation/AI/digital age.

Bingo. That's why I don't work in O+G. I love and support the industry wholeheartedly, but man is it vicious and cutthroat when it comes to ebbs and flows within it. I work in an industry that has tentacles outside of Alberta (and one that is super fun to work in on a daily basis too), so when the economy goes to #### in this city, I can still work on projects outside of the province. There's a piece of mind involved with it too, even at the sacrifice of higher compensation.

You’re absolutely right but to be fair this isn’t exactly a mindset that is exclusive to only the O&G sector

Recently I laid off the company I was working for. More than one individual crossed my boundaries, threw me under some buses, and then expected me to agree it was ok. Far far too much stress and impact to mental health which nobody needs. Company was great with lots of awesome folks otherwise. Thankfully a quick exit strategy was self-initiated and able to pursue readily available options. In some ways it's easier to go on your terms versus getting laid off. In some ways having the bandaid ripped off is also easier. Said based upon my own experiences during my career where I've experienced both several times.

Did you give them their severance or notice in lieu?

It sucks that you were put in a bad situation that forced you to quit your job and while I’m glad it worked out well for you, with only a finite number of available jobs out there it’s obviously not always going to be the case. In those cases it’s nice to have the ability to address the problem without having to give up your job. Unfortunately right now the labour and employment standards codes provide very few options to the majority of workers in this province dealing with these types of situations.
