If they get him down to 12.5 that's a big win for them. It's only 750K less but that will come in handy down the road.

Sounds like original @FriedgeHNIC reporting of 13.25m/yr for McDavid was accurate at the time, but the # he settled on may be lower.
That's crazy. I legit called it

The one positive from this contract extension is that is basically helps set the standard for what a top-tier player should be receiving; it would be a sliding scale from there.

That said, I should hope that this contract hasn't just inflated contracts with an artificial spike rather than a natural inflation rate.

Its 750k less, I wonder if it gets eaten by Draisaitl.

They're still going to cap hell that's not going to change.

Even if it's slightly less than was being discussed:

The trio of McDavid + Draisaitl + Lucic contracts are going to absolutely suffocate that team.

And it's awesome.

12.5M is still ton of money

He will need to be a 120+ point guy, maybe he is...imagine the pressure though, 90 points would be a massive disappointment

Don't forget Russell taking up 4M on the backend.

It would be so Oilers to be the opposite.

"We tried to get McJesus....I mean Connor....I mean McDavid, to accept a lower salary to help the team and we succeeded in doing so, he has agreed to an 8-Year, $14M per year deal. And my soul. Oh! And an MTC....a 'Must Trade Clause.' When he wants to get traded we have to do it."

It won't mean much if Drai's contract is 8 or over per year.

They're still looking at 20 million or more per year for 2/rds of a line.

TSN confirming the news conference at 1:00. Seems a little rushed for the biggest contract in the NHL, but Oilers...

Don't know what a "whisper number" is though...

I thought the $13.25 was already signed for 8 years. That's disappointing if he leaves money on the table.

Personally I think the kid is worth 8 x $14.

If he and his agent decided to take less than the 13.25M that was initially reported, It's likely gonna mean one of two things:
1. He'll be signing less than an 8yr contract.
2. It'll be heavily bonus structured.

Leave it to the Oilers to mess around with the face of their franchise.

One would have to think that if his cap number is coming down, then so is the term.

No. The only bonuses a RFA is eligible for are signing bonuses, and these count against the cap.

Or it could have to do with upfront bonus money.

I can see the negotiation - take the $750K haircut ($6 mil over term) and we will pay "x" upfront, so when there is a lockout, instead of you losing $13.25 mil, you will only lose "x" million

to me the lack of a bridge contract for players in his category is not a good trend.

I guess time will tell who this was a good deal for.

who knows, maybe Chia say across from McDavid and cried real tears about how they wanted to keep him and Drai. So McDavid said, sure man, take 750 grr off. I'm sure Drai will take less cause we're building something special.

So they'll announce the 12.5 for McDavid, then Drai will enter the press conference to
