The Habs are one of the richest clubs in the league. There is no chance the move had anything to do with the actual dollars owed to PK. You could argue for cap savings, but the Canadiens could care less about the money owed. If there was no salary cap in the NHL, Montreal would probably spend over 100 million per year on it's roster.

Will be very interesting to see how this, along with Hall/Larsson and Jones/Johansen, plays out over the next few years.

I'm going with a win for Preds, win for Devils, and wash for Preds/BJs.

Subban in Nashville:

He'll probably love it there, good fan support but not a microscope.

Man Nashville must be pretty happy with the way Subban has embraced the the team and city. Seems like he's already bringing a ton of excitement and good visibility to the team.
Regardless of how this works out on the ice, just having him there promoting the game/team might be the biggest win to come from this.

Hes killing it there at the moment, maybe his big personality and showmanship will be a better fit there.

Ex-Canadiens' analytics guy seems to be taking the salty route despite saying otherwise.

‘Analytics hasn’t reached maturity in the NHL yet': Matt Pfeffer
http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/an...-matt-pfeffer/

Matt Pfeffer had made peace with the fact that the Montreal Canadiens were going to trade star defenseman P.K. Subban. But he didn’t think dealing Subban to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber was a good idea and he made his feelings known to Canadiens management. But Pfeffer is not convinced that is why his contract as an analytics consultant with the Canadiens was not renewed.

“They didn’t tell me it was over that,” Pfeffer told thn.com. “But I guess everyone knows now where I stood on the Subban-Weber trade. There are times when there’s some possibility that there would be another side to the argument, but this was one of those things where it was so, so far outside what could be considered reasonable. I made a pretty strong case, but I made the case that the analytics made. This wasn’t a personal thing.”

...

“There’s nothing wrong with being average in the NHL,” Pfeffer said. “An average NHLer is worth a heck of a lot and that’s what Shea Weber is.”

If his analysis came up with "Shea Weber = Average NHLer" I'm not surprised he was turfed.

Lol no joke. There are strong arguments to be made that having Subban is better than having Weber. But Weber being average is not one of them.

Show me some analytics that prove the analytics work over a large enough data set! I actually think this trade works out really well for both teams in the short to medium term. Habs and Preds both will both go on multiple nice playoff runs over the next few years. Preds probably win it in the long run.

If you just read the quotes attributed to Pfeffer, he comes across as very level headed and clinical. He had some analysis that favoured PK, but in the end they sided with "another solution"/weber. I can't tell if he feels analytics is the only way to evaluate or if he feels analytics is part of the mosaic.

Campbell's added comments of "eye test" and "NHL establishment".....i can't tell if that is Pfeffer or Campbell's spin and attempt to make this more analytics vs old school.

Matt Pfeffer @MattPfefferHky
Deeply regret recent negative comments made to THN regarding Weber and Canadiens. They do not represent my true feelings on player or club.

I don't see the problem with what Pfeffer said. That's more or less the same opinion I have of Weber, and I've watched him play probably hundreds of times. He's Dion Phaneuf, if Phaneuf could hit the net with his slap shot.

This reaction basically confirms what I thought of Weber - he's a good defenseman who's become massively, massively overrated due to playing with Suter and Josi, two of the top 10 defensemen in the NHL, for his entire career.

Based on unit of performance per dollar Weber is decidedly average.

This is what i was wondering. His quotes were softer than how Campbell portrayed them. THN.....brutal reporting......just swirling down the toilet bowl. A couple more flushes and that sad magazine is toast unfortunately.

Oh no! Then how will the Oilers know who to draft 1st overall?

We'll agree to disagree on this one. No question the Habs ownership has deep pockets - but with a stable dollar, I doubt this deal is seriously considered. It's not a terrible hockey trade, but it's not in the Canadians favor. And I'm not convinced that personality and cultural conflicts were enough to force the move on their own.
