SAP seems like a weird choice for jersey sponsors. I would assume that a jersey sponsor would be a company that is much more consumer centric as opposed to business or enterprise centric. A company like McD's or Ford or Budweiser could possibly benefit somewhat but I just don't understand what SAP could benefit from slapping their name on the jerseys.

It is neutral to good looking on the blueish jersyes.

Looks really awful on the Canada jerseys though.

Honestly that SAP patch could easily be confused for a memorial patch for a deceased player/coach with the initials SAP if someone didn't know it was an ad.

James Mirtle @mirtle
The NHL will have puck and player tracking at the World Cup.

James Mirtle @mirtle
They'll track puck and player speed, distance between all players etc. Will be used during broadcasts.

James Mirtle @mirtle
A tag like the one on the right will be sown into jerseys near the name plate on the back.

This is awesome.

...Oh, and every time I see this thread at the top of the front page I instinctively read the title as "2016 World Cult of Hockey."

This is pretty sweet, I wonder if this is something that is coming to the NHL and they are trying it out here.

So the blue streak means pass and red streak means shot, right?

Yep, and we all know what the brown streak is, and let's hope we don't see any of those.

If the streaks come back, then Sportsnet needs to introduce cartoon robots before the start of each period.

That's super tight. This is exactly what's been missing in hockey analytics. Real data that's not subjective to somebody determining what's a hit, what's a shot attempt, what's a clean takeaway, etc.

Now we know how SAP is paying for their jersey sponsorship.

I thought the NHL used jersey chips in the all star game to track player speed and distance.

They did. During the World Cup presentation today they showed footage of this in use from the All Star Game.
