Some parts were okay. The acting is wooden as a door stop and the characters to this point are not compelling.
I thought Sonequa Martin was mediocre on TWD, and is even more so on this.
The main thing with Star Trek and what makes it good were the personalities of the characters. Enterprise's characters were all wooden and the show was garbage. On Voyager, the only non wooden character was the Doctor and was the only good part of the show by in large. DS9 all of the characters save Jake were interesting in their own right and the show was one of the three good shows. TNG obviously was much the same as was TOS. In order to tell Trek stories effectively, you need characters that are compelling as people. Not wooden amalgams.
T'Kumva or whatever his name was, was the least wooden of the characters and he's gone now.
The Klingons look really stupid on top of all of that. When you have 30+ years of one way of doing an Alien race's appearance, you don't screw with that just for the sake of being different. I did not feel like I was watching Star Trek when watching the scenes with the Klingons. It would have looked stupid had they been a different species and not one as high profile as the Klingons.
As for the story, it could be interesting depending on where they go. I do not have high hopes. It looked nice though.
I'd give it a 2/10 and that's mostly for the visuals.

Tonights episode was better then last week. Mainly because Jason Isaac's is a great choice as a captain. He always plays great characters with hidden agenda's.
I thought that Sonequa Martin-Jones was better tonight, maybe because she was more relaxed in her role.
Its certainly a different feel.
I didn't mind the Discovery's design, I like the fact that its not a pretty ship and looks like a ship of war.
I also liked that the Helms Woman was back from the first episode with obvious injuries and in her small on screen appearance stared hate filled darts at Michael.
The room mate thing was awkward, and its clear that the room mate is supposed to have ADD or something, but it felt so unnecessarily over played as the "Hey I'm annoying and talk to much and snore and stuff" moments
Spoiler!
The Bio travel thing is interesting but obviously it has to fail somehow as it didn't show in the TOS, and I still believe that the Captain wants some kind of Bio Weapon which is why he captured the monster that was probably a side effect of the experiment.
I didn't really connect with Stamets, and not because he's promoted as an openly gay character. But because he was whiny and annoying and weak.
It was nice seeing Rekha Sharma again as she was such a strong character in BattleStar Galactica.
Ok just some thoughts
Spoiler!
A Federation ship carrying out unknown biological experiments with the soul purpose of winning the war. Plus the black badges that nobody has seen before. Is it possible that Captain Lorca and some of the crew are part of Section 31? Any path to victory.
Michael running down the Jeffrey's tube quoting Alice in Wonder land was actually really well done and I loved it.
A couple of continuity issues.
Captain Lorca had a tribble on his desk, but iirc correctly the Federation was clueless about tribbles til Trouble with Tribbles in the TOS.
Going to the Romulon home world was awkward at best as the Federation hadn't even seen a Romulan face until balance of terror, they had fought a brief war before view screens.
Overall it was an improvement over last weeks opening episodes, the space scenes weren't as busy so we could admire some of the ship views in space.

They are doing their best to make everyone in Starfleet annoying and unlikable. Why does everyone have to be tossing around biting quips and come across like they hate everyone around them and life in general.
I hope it's temporary I don't know if I can watch an entire season or more where everything is joyless.
I think they were going for whiny and annoying with his character. He started out as a science nerd, not an officer or in the military.
One could complain about the inconsistencies of the technology, holographic interfaces, etc, but meh whatever I want it to look cool, it doesn't bug me if it doesn't fit 100% in the timeline.

Ok, the whole spore-universe-instantaneous-travel thing was dumb. Like, really dumb. Painfully dumb. But fine, if that's the McGuffin, whatever.
The rest I liked. Looks like it will be interesting.
I'm guessing that they wanted to do their own version of string theory that involves bio theory. At least that's how they explained it.
Did it make a lot of sense? Nope, but its start trek where you can create inverse tachyon beams on the fly in seconds.
I found it interesting that they just put a convict in a room with a star fleet officer, in reality she'd be in a brig and then to work, and as a room mate, I'm sleeping with a phaser if I have a convinced mutineer who assaulted a captain in my room, but they need to have the foil that breaks down Michael and makes her more human.
It'll be interested to see what the CBS streaming numbers are like over the next few episodes.

Yeah, I'm learning to ignore the technology changes.
You could argue that the slick jewellery buttons and crappy looking screens that are plainly cut out drawings in TOS as a massive leap forward in human interfaces.
And they found out that holographic emmittors caused testicular cancer and porn addiction and outlawed them.

I'm just glad it's as good as it is, all the problems sure made it feel like it was going to be a massive letdown.
EDIT: Lol and replaced them with holodecks, and had a whole character dedicated to holodeck addiction issues
Its funny because I watched a video of a bunch of friends playing Bridge Commander. And when they played in the nu trek bridge, the controls made sense and everything was labeled.
Then they tried the Enterprise TOS series and hilarity ensued because nothing was labeled and it was all just buttons.
You could hear the Captain ordering course changes and firing weapons and the guys playing those stations panicking because they couldn't find the buttons.
Bridge crew played by Burton, Ryan and Urban.

There's also a Gorn skeleton in Lorca's weird lab. They mentioned it on After Trek and the producer said "Yes, Starfleet's first meeting with the Gorn is in 'Arena' -- so what kind of person does that make Lorca?" or something to that effect.
Clearly there is more going on then meets the eye and those are more than fan easter eggs. The whole thing is likely a big Section 31 expedition.
Slightly better 3rd episode. Some dumb things still, but we'll see where it goes. It's already better than Enterprise though because some characters are actual people instead of robotic.

This trek reminds me of Wing Comander. The gritty dark corridors and the fighting for survival. It doesn't feel like trek as their is no aspiration for doing better. It will be good a show I think though.
It was nice to finally see the Discovery and learn the direction the show will be heading. I love Isaacs as the Captain but am not sure how I feel about whiny science guy and annoying ginger roommate.
Also, that spore travel thing is incredibly ridiculous but it should allow for some interesting story lines in different parts of the universe.

Very different vibe from previous shows / not sure I like it mainly because the characters for the most part are annoying. Need patience to see how it progresses but so far it's hmmm.

I'm assuming you're talking about the movie which ranked as one of the worst video game movies of all time and a prime example of Chris Roberts gone insane?
as soon as I saw the shaved Kilrathi and the ships dipping on take off because of gravity I was like, I'm out.

The spore travel thing was a massive mistake, imo. This series is set before TOS, and they introduce tech that is beyond anything in TNG, set over a century later? It's a pretty dumb anachronism.
Also, if Burnham ends up as the only character we're actually supposed to like and or sympathize with, this show is in a lot of trouble.

I think that's why this spore thing either has to be a dismal failure, or its a cover for something else related to the alien creature on the ship and the reason why the dead guy was all mutilated like.
So the question becomes, is this a section 31 plot to end the war and do we get another mutiny possibly on the Discovery with the normal star fleet and scientists on one side, and Lorca and the black badges on the other.

Or maybe what the Iconians discovered years ago and the basis for the Gateway tech?
That could go all sorts of places, maybe they find a more existential threat than the Klingons down the road they have to deal with or they get trapped somewhere?
