The real winner of the draft? Noah Hanifin.

Mods, can we take off the swear filter for 24 hours? This is seriously a
W...
T...
F...
moment.
And agree with all the questions on why this was done during the playoffs. Tacky and distracting for sure.

I can see it now: 2030 Edmonton Oilers win Stanley Cup for first time in 40 years off the strength of 14 former 1st overall picks including 38 year old Taylor Hall and 33 year old Connor McDavid.
In other news, Oilers must win their next 437 games to get their all time record back to .500 but hey, at least they won something and all it cost them was their dignity.

If MacTavish isn't all bluster and really wants to keep all his forward "core" then they'll still be bad, just less so.
If he wasn't a colossal moron, he'd ship out two of those wingers for defensive depth and rebuild his core. However, he is a colossal moron, and they have no idea how to build a team.
It sucks ass that they got McDavid, but the Oilers are still going to Oiler.

This fiasco just enhances my disdain for the league. If the Flames didn't exist I would boycott the entire league. I vowed after the last lockout that I wouldn't spend a dollar of my money to see a game or buy merchadise. So far I have been true and will continue to do so. The whole league can burn to the ground. Just another corrupt, mismanaged mess. I hope the suckers in Edmonton continue to fork over their hard earned cash to watch a garbage team.

Yeah, but even if they trade them they likely will be taking some money back too. It's going to be fun watching that cap mess. Hard to believe that dumpster fire is a cap team as is...

Assets can be traded to shore up those holes...
even now, with 4 number 1 picks + a number 3 and a number 6, the Cap system will not allow those players to stay together... 3-4 all stars is all the cap system will allow for players at their prime...
However, that doesn't mean they cannot trade Nail and/or Hall for additional assets....even the oilers can't be that inept.

You think MacT is gonna get good value? What would you give them off the Flames for Hall or RNH (leaving aside they'd never do a deal)?
No one is going to give them a top tier defenceman for Hall, and that's what they think they deserve.

If I'm Oilers GM I finally have a shot at getting a kings ransom that could turn around my d corps in an instant. Imagine trading down to Hanifin and getting Reilly, and any forward on the Leafs roster, as well as another stud prospect or pick or two.
Hanifin, Reilly, Nurse, Klefbom is a strong D corps you can build around.
Getting a big winger like van riemsdyk could help out the softness of the top 6.
Showing a yearning for a culture change can also go a long way to attracting a solid head coach that can start developing the group properly.
Then using the draft to develop solid depth on the forward ranks, and using the free agent market to get the best goalie you can get your hands on while you develop a goalie yourself.
But instead of all that they're going to keep the same coaching and management staff, draft another forward who's never going to develop anything other than his offence, and still have the glaring holes on defence which allow the goaltending to look so god awful.
I say draft McDavid and keep the management crew, incompetency might let you luck out with a McDavid, but it's still not gonna pull you out of the sh*t hole you've spent a decade creating.

I'm not worried about them winning multiple cups in a row or anything its a totally different era...even in the last few seasons. Just the fact that those asshats walk out of this season with a reward like this. Their ####ing fans all summer fack. The media?!?! Sportsnet chick just said the Oilers get "richer" same bs we have been dealing with all over again but this time it will be even worse. Every dumb ass kid will be wearing his jersey and suddenly a bandwagon fan like with Crosby
It honestly makes me wish I didn't like hockey and didn't care...but I do obviously its 12:40am and posting about it

well, WPG got Myers and Stafford for Kane and Bogosian...
so, yes, it's possible for Mct, however astonishing it may be, to trade Nail or Hall for a young up and comer...
RNH for a Hanfin? or Hall for the kid from the Wheaties? Certainly would give the other GM something to look at... all depends on the needs of the other team

Yes, but can they get value? If you answer yes I think you put too much faith in Edmonton's brass. GMs are going to be lowballing them unless they trade McDavid, Hall or Nugent-Hopkins and I think they will be hesitant to do so. I think the more likely scenario is next year's 1st, Eberle/Yakupov up for sale, and I really don't see the proceeds of such a trade changing their fortunes THAT much, especially with ol' clown shoes in charge.

They trade Eberle before Hall and I doubt they trade both... just my opinion.

Look at the numbers. 3-4 franchise guys in their prime is all a franchise can retain up the cap.
pittsburgh: Fleury, Letang, Gino, Crosby
Chicago: Seabrook, Keith, Toews, Kane
LA: Doughty, Quick, Carter, Kopitar (Richards is now an anchor...Vyonov (sp) is an unknown)
Oilers have RNH, Hall, Eberle, Driasatl, Nurse, Nail and now McDavid...They absolutely WILL make a trade for a DMan in the offseason...As brain dead as that franchise is, even they aren't THAT dumb...
and if they are, they can just wait for the 2016 "Lottery" where they can get another top 5 pick...or maybe another Number 1...
