Is there only 3 episodes left? Holy smokes this is going fast.

I think this season has generally kept picking up steam to this point. Performances, for some reason, seem to be getting better as the episodes progress.
They've really stepped up the complexity factor in the story which is only further complicated by the larger primary cast.
The opening is actually starting to grow on me too.

Umm, so they had a huge shootout... and then essentially forget it happened, except that it gave them a chance to essentially reboot the season.
Sheesh, the writing in this season is a mess. I'm still probably going to watch it until the end, but my expectations are pretty low.

What do you mean they forget it happened? It was addressed throughout the episode in terms of how they "closed" the case, and how it impacted each character in terms of their job, etc.

I think you gapped out on some parts there, maybe watch it again. The shootout was definitely part of the overall plot arc.
The whole thing has been written and shot anyway, there's no reboots in this type of show. Like a season of GoT, or pretty much any other HBO show. It's all written and shot and edited before it goes to air.
That said, how good a part of the plot it is, remains to be seen. I dunno myself, I'm liking it more in some respects than I was when it first started, and finding a lot of cliche in other respects. It's a decent show, but it certainly doesn't have the magic of the first season. Not by a long shot. Though, I'm going along for the ride, and hopefully what they are building to will be worth it.

Same thing happened in the first season, marty and Rust had a big fist fight and FFWD ten years Marty is a divorced PI and Rust is a bartender. Actually I think the only major difference between the two seasons is the lack of gratuitous sex and nudity in this season. If they had a young actress remove her top there would be a lot less complaints IMO. Although, none of the characters this time are nearly as interesting as Rust was.

Meh. I don't see it. For me it felt like a reboot, a way to explain why we're now telling the same story with everybody in slightly different places. They started to explain the previous plot in a way that pretty much turned it into backstory. Bezzerides and Velcoro were given new very simple motivations that were spelled out to the audience in very explicit ways. The plotlines of the cops and the mobster were connected by introducing a MacGuffin that everybody is now pursuing. The previous stuff pretty much became backstory instead of "plot". Not that there was much of a plot.
I'm aware of how they make these serieses. That doesn't make the story any less of a mess. As for the reasons, I'm guessing for the normal stuff. Meddling producers, agents, actors. Unfavourable reactions from the preview audiences. General lack of direction from the writer. Too little time to actually write the stuff. Most likely a combination of many of those things.

So Taylor Kitsch saying "These contracts...there's signatures all over them" is definitely the line of the series right? Been a while since I laughed so hard at a line.

There was a bunch of a nonsense at the beginning of the episode that was barfing out of Vince Vaughn's mouth that I thought was pretty epic.

I do hear you there. It felt like it got kinda predictable after that. That's my problem with the series right now. Very tropey.
Backstory sure, I get that. OBVIOUS backstory, which is kinda disappointing. I guess I just didn't understand your first comment. It's obviously not a reboot. They wrote and planned that. For whatever reason. I think I know, but I won't judge until the final scene is played. But yes, it feels very set up now.
Still, there is good parts to the show. I like it. It's a 7 out of 10 at least. I'm just not over the moon with it the way I was with the first season.

While we're covering ridiculous things from this week's episode, we can't forget that she made herself vomit to get rid of drugs that were sprayed into her mouth.

The way they make these things isn't that different from a movie, and these days even movies aren't fully scripted before the shooting starts.
Later on they can edit things so that it looks like they planned some things from the start, but from the way this series has been, I seriously doubt anyone meant it to be such a mess.
EDIT: Not that it matters really. The end product is what matters, not how we got there.

Maybe I'm just not nitpicking as much, but I think the season has been pretty solid. It was always going to be a near impossible challenge to match the quality of the first season, but all in all season 2 has been much better than most anything else on TV right now.
The hyper-noir vibe feels a little forced and distracting, though.

Yeah it's still pretty well the best show on this time of year. It's not as good as season one but I'm enjoying it.

You clearly haven't been watching "Under the Dome".
I've enjoyed it so far. A little lost at first, but there have been lots of hints from the first few episodes that are paying off now. Is it as fantastic as the first season? No, but a lot of that was chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson. I'm not sure the story was that much better.

I don't think itse was suggesting it was a literal reboot, but simply a figurative one. As itse explained in his follow up, they jumped forward and gave everyone new stories and motivations. To me that seems rather shortsighted considering we only have an 8 episode season to tell a compelling story. And I know season 1 jumped around a lot, but they had a lot better actors and stories that allowed it to work. With this season, I think they tried to give too many characters deep backstories and it has really muddled up any sort of main story.
