A small update about the Sabres opening:
Mike Harrington@BNHarrington17m
So while Hockey Central says Tim Murray is favorite for #Sabres GM, Hockey Night in Canada said Benning on Saturday. Canada likes its rumors
Elliotte Friedman@FriedgeHNIC8m
@BNHarrington FWIW, I heard this morning Murray had a second interview...sent a request for confirmation, have not heard anything.
Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie2m
@FriedgeHNIC @BNHarrington Murray had 2nd interview, appears frontrunner but no one's (Benning, Treliving, Futa) been told yet they r out.

Murray seems, to me at least, to be the least desirable of those candidates.

Which is why it'll be great when Buffalo hires him.

Bob, Tim and Bryan Murray all brothers. correct?

Tim Murray is Bryan Murray's nephew.
Bryan Murray's brother is Terry Murray.
No relation to Bob Murray as far as I know.

Bob McKenzie said in the intermission of the Isles/Leafs that the Flames GM search could go on until the draft.
Reading between the lines I think that points to someone like Futa, or another head scout currently under contract with another team.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Futa and Treliving likely to be amongst the candidates for vacant CGY GM job, a search that may take until NHL draft to fill.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Some clubs which granted permission for execs to talk to BUF may not do it again so soon for CGY, preferring to wait til off season.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Growing # of NHL GMs frustrated by NHL rules not permitting clubs to be compensated for losing off-ice personnel to other clubs.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
DET GM Ken Holland/CGY prez Brian Burke spearheading long-standing pro-compensation forces. Others joining in after lengthy BUF GM search.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
NHL commish Gary Bettman is adamantly opposed to even discussing notion of returning to days of clubs being compensated for lost employees.

No way Burke takes the job full time, he would be a fool to take the job.
Anyone coming in to fill the role, neutered by Burke (and who knows who else), is probably not an A Player.
I don't see how a GM Jr. is anything more than a domestique for Burke.
Am I just being pessimistic or am I having a money of lucidity? Maybe the Flames are more like the Oilers (in terms of goofy crazy management) than I thought.

With Benning still available I wonder if he would be a quick hire and then hire Futa for AGM at the end of the draft.

I don't really want to be giving picks to another team for fulfilling the dream of one of their employees either. Maybe we can send LA a Frys gift card and a nice gift basket with some wine and special jams and some antipasto.

and for those who were wondering, I believe Burke gave up a 2nd round pick so Colorado would let him hire Marc Crawford in Vancouver and a 2nd round pick so he could hire Carlyle in Anahiem

Brian Burke would be my first choice.
Edit - Don't like the compensation idea though.

Yes he did, but he also said that you can't do that anymore.
EDIT: nm, hadn't seen the tweets you added to earlier post yet.

I'd pay a 2nd for either of Babcock or Holland, but these days that is a steep price to pay unless its a marquis guaranteed star executive.

Well I certainly hope Burke doesn't give up the 32nd overall pick in this draft for the right to hire somebody.

Here's an outside the box GM candidate: Chris Pronger
He has a background with Burke and values the type of hockey Burke likes. He's a young smart hockey mind and a winner that Burke could mentor in the role.
Quote:

"Chris is one of the smartest guys in hockey I know," Holmgren told Campbell. "He has a real grasp of the game and a real understanding of his position and everybody else's position on the ice. He's like Tom Brady as a player. He just knows that much about what's going on."
|

'Highs and lows'
In the meantime, Pronger will continue to work for the Flyers as a roving scout. He has watched, live or on video, the pro game for the Flyers as well as junior and United States collegiate games, too. He sits in management meetings. Why not tap the same smarts Pronger exhibited on the ice and in the dressing room, in the boardroom?
There is no doubt, if he chooses, Pronger can follow the path of superstars-turned-team-executives in the NHL like Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, Cam Neely and Rob Blake. But he has time to find his way.
|
I know he is still under contract but his playing days are over. Since he is under contract with the Flyers we'd have to trade for him (which as far as I know there is no rule against trading for an injured player. If I recall correctly, Burke traded for an injured Kolzig's contract while he was with the Leafs). The contract has 3 years left with a cap-hit of just under 5. If the contract stayed the cost would be 4 million, $575 000 and $575 000 for the next three years and the Flames could still place Pronger on LTIR (the Flames would then be paying his player contract for him to perform GM duties). If the Flames had Pronger retire officially the cap hit would stay (which could be helpful to hit the floor rather than overpaying/getting bad players on bad contracts). All that being said, Pronger may still not be recovered enough from his concussions for the GM responsibility but I thought it would be an interesting idea as Burke said his role as President of Hockey Operations would potentially make it a good set up for a rookie GM or former player stepping into a GM role. It would also make sense as an off-season hiring rather than during the season.

Burke indicated he would be fine hiring “either a young guy with great promise and maybe some experience, or just a young star that hasn’t been given a chance. That’s the beauty of this management structure – you could literally take a guy out of uniform if you believed in him and turn him loose, and he could avoid those big mistakes that young GMs make.”
