Jay Onrait tunes in on how to fix the Oilers (from Reddit):

Jay,
I'm a huge fan of yours, a medium sized fan of Dans, an am relatively indifferent towards Producer Tim.
My question is: can you offer any words of hope to the long suffering Oilers fans such as myself?
Thanks!

Not really. Unless Katz comes to his senses and fires everyone in the front office (but keeps Eakins)

Even Eakins has to go. he looks overwhelmed at this level. He shoudl have started off as an asst coach in the NHL first.
But no Jay, stay the course!

IMO Yakupov will be a monster as soon as EDM trades him.
That's the best part of this saga.

Can't really blame Eakins here.
He has an average to below average goaltender.
A terrible defense core.
An injury prone top 6 that doesn't play a strong 200ft game.
And a bottom 6 that lacks depth or any real good players outside of Boyd Gordon.

well he should have become a good assistant coach and then became a head coach.

Too good for the AHL, not good enough to coach an NHL team.

What available coach is going to get anything out of that squad, really?

Scotty Bowman, bribe money and a bullwhip couldnt get that team into the top 20 of the league.

I think there is certainly some blame that falls on Eakins shoulders.
Just by watching him play and listening to some Oiler fans
His line matching is atrocious
Coaches in the NHL have gotten a lot more out of less talented teams in the past
The team effort has been pretty poor as is their compete level
They play like they have no system.
You can say that the goaltending is bad, and it has been but the Oilers give up a lot of amazingly good chances from the danger areas.
Their PP and PK, two areas that were solid last year with what you could say were lesser talents is worse.
Kruger and Renney dealt with weaker lineups and got more out of them.

Kruger got them out of the bottom 3, thats practically sacrilege in Edmonton by this point.
Renney though was 30th and 29th. Granted, the team he had to work with was like trying to juggle soggy feces.

I wouldn't underrate Scotty Bowman's effect on a team. He won't need bribe money just lots of tissues (possibly for himself to use).

Stauffer sure likes to drink the blue Kool-Aid.
@Bob_Stauffer Nail Yakupov through 62NHL GP 18-16-34. Fellow #1 overall and ex-Sarnia Sting Steven Stamkos thru 62NHL GP...14-17-31...Relax!

Lowe recruited and brought into the "inner fold", most of these schlubs a long time ago to be his mouthpeices. He knew they would be the best people to keep the masses calm through having guys like Stauffer, Jones and Matheson explain Lowe's side of moves and lack of moves and draft picks...and useful as a weapon in praising draft picks and trades, while ripping players that left or wanted to leave (*cough*Prongeroutrightlies*cough*) to bring the fans together as part of the "Oiler way".
Thus there are still large parts of fan base and the Mudcrutch's of the world turning a blind eye to the root of the problem thanks to the message the media passes on down to the lowly fans.
Also goes to show Lowe's indignant attitude at the "Tier 1 fans" presser, as he thought he had all the assembled media in the room in the palm of his hand, and how dare someone break from the script.

I think it is much more likely yakupov becomes the next radulov than the next stamkos.

That's pretty disingenuous and is prone to set unrealistic expectations for the Oilers fan base. What Stauffer fails to mention is that after game #62, Stamkos figured it out, and never looked back. He scored 15 points in his final 17 of his rookies season, and followed that up with a +90 point second year. Furthermore, Stamkos had already started to show sure signs of breaking out even before game #50.
What should be most troubling for the Oilers and their fans—but of course, Stauffer ignores this rather critical point—is that Yakupov LOOKS WORSE now than he did at any point last year. Also missing is the CRUCIAL FACT that Yakupov is NOT playing his rookie season like Stamkos was, and that Stamkos became a point/game player before his 20th birthday.

Also if I remember correctly Stamkos didn't get the minutes Yakupov did on his rookie year, guess he did after they fired the coach and the rest is pretty much history.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 7m
Yakupov will play tonight vs Lightning. After yesterdays show of support, no sense in scratching him.
