Normal citizens DO NOT NEED OR SHOULD BE ABLE to buy high capacity Magazines. The country isn't subject to war or any sort of government intervention that would warrant anyone having that kind of fire capacity. If you are going hunting... And you need more than 5 bullets.... Then DON'T hunt

This is in addition to a government that spies on their own people and ignores their own people's cry to stop going to war all the time.

Gun control is just one of many issues that country faces, and I'm nervous to see how it will be in 50 years when I'm about to kick the bucket.
Are all the mirrors in your home broken?

Reading between the lines though I think you bring up a good point and you're right. There are many issues that all countries face. Trying to bring gun control to the States should be near the bottom of the list right now.

I think it is already shifting. While there is an increase in the amount of guns purchased, there is a decrease in the amount of people who own them. So fewer people are buying more guns. Only ~33% of Americans own a gun.

There are over 300,000,000 million guns in the US. Almost 1 for every person.

From the daily show last week...if you define mass shootings as 4 or more victims the US has had 250 so far this year. In 260 days.

Well as that was last week they've had a handful more now.

X 25% of the population has mental issues X chance of more innocent people murdered by guns = highly probable.

A man in Texas repeatedly fires his gun at people at McDonald's but the gun doesn't ever go off inside.

I feel like a real hypocrite sometimes because I plan to move to a rural area and think "oh jeez, a woman alone, I should have a gun".
I know a woman , also single, who lives in the same area. The only thing she's had to shoot is a rattle snake. I don't know the circumstances-I doubt I would shoot anything.

I'm well prepared psychologically for a bear in the kitchen.

Not unheard of in Florida!

We had a large black bear in town late Monday night. There's a youtube video of the cops hazing it out of town. Nobody shot it, though it is bear season right now.

I have a black bear come around every year about this time. She eats the blackberries and the pears off my tree and used to raid my garbage.

There is absolutely no parallel.

1. I'm not in Florida
2. Zimmerman not a cop
3. Bear was absolutely looking for trouble

My mother lives in Longwood, a suburb of Orlando. There was a video on youtube of 2 black bears fighting on a front lawn in her neighborhood.

Her neighborhood is not the "sticks", but a doe had her babies in the front yard. A black bear and her cub often hung out in the back yard. A male bear sat on the bench in the yard, and came up to the screened-in porch to check out the pool but never damaged anything. The most they do so far is knock over the trash can .

They did have a bear in the garage.

Where I plan to move is north of there and more rural. And there are lots of lakes and hills, too. What I appreciate about Fish and Wildlife is that they are very hesitant to remove bears just because people don't like them around.
Why would you move there knowing they're there?

I wouldn't be too trusting of any bear, but the Florida black bear is not exactly a grisly.

Good New York Times piece on how the accidental shooting of (and often by) children is massively underreported. Of note, the NRA actively lobbies against efforts to improve reporting while actively using bad statistics to try and argue the safety of firearms.

On that note, pre-schoolers with access to firearms have killed more Americans this year than terrorists have.

Unbelievable

Quote:
Lucas’s father, Joshua Heagren, had tried to teach the 3-year-old to respect firearms. The boy had gotten a .22 rifle for Christmas, and his father showed him how to fire it. But he also warned him to handle it only when an adult was present.

That line stood out to me too. Giving a gun to a young child is little more than choosing to play Russian roulette. Thank god he gave the kid a stern verbal warning though. Because three-year-olds are well known for listening to those.

Edit: The comments section is definitely interesting, but to me in a different way. The comments from people critical of unfettered access to guns are being liked at about a 10-1 ratio to those from rah-rah guns are safe people. Now, the NYT's demographics are likely skewing that relative to America as a whole, but it does give an indication as to the thinking of the silent majority.
