boy is doubles tennis ever sad. Nestor and Mirnyi are grand slam champions, but not only does the stadium look like a mid-January Coyotes game, but they don't even really celebrate after winning match point. I've seen more emotion from singles players winning their first match of an ATP 500 tourney.

I guess it's just a niche of tennis that will never be popular, but still congrats to Nestor on his 8th slam...dude is almost 40 and still racking them up.

How much money did Nestor win for his doubles title? I bet not much at all

340,000 Euros for the team (170K each). By comparison, the singles champions get 1.25M Euros

even the losers in the singles quarter-finals make 150K Euros

Doubles used to be very popular in the 70s and early 80s when you had the top players playing both singles and doubles. Guys like Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase and of course, John McEnroe are all Grand Slam singles and doubles winners. John Newcombe won 7 singles finals and 17 doubles finals. I used to love watching McEnroe and Peter Fleming. Johnny Mac might have been the greatest doubles player I've seen.

yup and if you didn't know Johnny Mac's playing history and that of his rivals, you will be an expert after hearing his commentary for one match.

Anyone up early to catch the start of this final? Brutally slow start by Nole, but he's dug back in. I think there will be far more service breaks than holds over the course of this match.

Rain delay now. It hasn't been the best tennis thus far.

Still don't believe this comeback is really gonna happen but if it does, it will be the greatest of all time...and it might be enough to break rafa's brain forever.

Rafa looks completely rattled right now. I think this thing is going to go to the 5th and then who knows.

Nestor won the doubles again and is the #1 ranked doubles player in the world.

That's good heading into the olympics

Definitely feel pretty cheated of a great ending. As soon as it was postponed yesterday Rafa was going to win. Gotta say the fans there do not like him at all, that might have been the most timid reaction from a crowd ever for a guy setting a major record.

I'm happy to move onto Wimbledon soon. I was rather underwhelmed by the French overall this year.

Nadal turned 26 last week. How many French Opens does he end up with? Over/Under @ 10?

I'd say Nadal is probably a lock again next year, and then after that its gonna depend how his body holds up. I kinda wish the French Open would go the Augusta National route and start "Rafa-proofing" Roland Garros in an effort to maybe neutralize his ridiculous advantage there. We saw yesterday when he gets less than ideal conditions he's very beatable there. Ideal conditions and you might as well concede in advance.

you mean less than acceptable conditions...

clay is not meant to break off into chunks like cake and the tennis balls are not supposed to be soaked like sponges...

if you cannot appreciate his special talent as a clay court player than you cannot appreciate the sport of tennis.

either way vamoss rafa prince of champions!
