Report: Karmanos wants to sell ‘Canes, even if it means relocation

According to a report by 98.5 Sports in Montreal, Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos wants to get his money out of the team, even if it means the ‘Canes are sold and relocated.
Today’s report comes on the heels of an apparent settlement in the lawsuit involving Karmanos and his three sons — a settlement that could make a sale more likely.
The question all along has been whether Karmanos can find a new owner that’s willing to keep the team in Raleigh.
Yep, like I said, they'll be starting next season in Quebec. We're hearing more about the rumors of this move than the Thrashers to Winnipeg, but the announcement will be similar.
People will assume there won't be an announcement in time for the team to start next season and then it will come out of nowhere and everything will happen fast.

I think there was also a rumour of the league going to 33 teams (3x11 conferences) but I am unsure about that. How would playoffs work?
The top 4 teams in each division have a playoff until victor emerges.
The 3 champions have each player put their name in the Goblet of Fire and the chosen heroes battle it out in the TriWizard tournament for the Stanley Cup.

The only way I could see something that extreme working would be if there were 8 teams to make it from each conference (it is the only number that works) in which they enter into a round robin championship with the top two teams have a best of five.
It is too extreme and complicated to make any actual sense though.
It only works with a conference-free playoff format that is straight 1-16. And probably a set up where 14 qualify outright and the next four play a one-game play-in.
The whole point of the recent realignment was to encourage playoff rivalries. A Buffalo-San Jose first round matchup would be ridiculous. The division playoff needs to remain.
This is a bit of a crazy idea, but what if overall division vs. division record determined how many teams from each division qualified? Top 2 divisions get 6 teams each, other division gets 4. First round is within division, getting us down to 3,3,2. 2 teams are split out to the other divisions (top record division gets lower point team). Then re-seeding and possible travel are still a problem in round 2 and beyond.
Karmanos was "quietly" replaced on the NHL executive committee today. Quietly as in the NHL announced Chipman and Molson would be joining the committee, but did not point out they were replacing Ed Snider (who passed away) and Karmanos.
Also earlier when asked why he wasn't at this week's BOG meetings, Bettman said Karmanos had a sinus infection that prevented him from flying.

I was wondering exactly this. For what reason would Karmanos need to be removed from the Executive Committee? Only thing that kind of makes sense in my eyes is perhaps there is an imminent sale?

Encouraging playoff rivalries, yawn. More like discouraging rivalries. The conference playoff needs to be returned.
