The Benoit trade reminds me of the Grilli trade.
Big, 39 year old right handed power arm having an off year.
Grilli has been completely rejuvenated since joining the Jays, hopefully the same happens with Benoit.

That game was insane! Huge win with Baltimore and Houston coming up after we hopefully sweep the Padres.

Texas lost. That's a shame.

Have you been watching games this year? Travis' defence has been great and he has yet to commit an error this season.
For what it's worth, Upton came up as a SS so he probably could play 2B

Help, save, whatever.

Just watched the condensed game and I think next time an ump misses a call that goes against Bautista he should let it slide because that ball 4 to him was definitely a strike. The ump had been calling the low-strike all game.

A couple responses to some posts:
- Travis' D has been wayyyy better than advertised, to the point where it is at least average and maybe slightly above average, and he is a good hitter that is getting better.
- I read that internally the Jays had Hansal (Gretel?) Rodriguez outside of their top 30 internally, so that trade just becomes better and better, plus Upton has come in with the right attitude.
- The Jays are only paying the difference between the salaries of Storen and Benoit which is about $375,000.00, less than a league minimum player. That is money they were going to have to spend when Storen's DFA time ran out as there was no way he was going to the minors, he would have opted for free agency leaving the Jays on the hook anyway. If Benoit gives the team anything, a huge win. If he doesn't, nothing lost.
- Moving Dickey up is smart as:
a) Baltimore would feast on him
b) Gives Martin two full days off
c) Top three starters face the O's

Hope the Jays don't look ahead of this day game today, but that weekend series vs. Baltimore is going to be crazy!

Now go an get a starter. I would love to get Quintana. That dude has been so underrated, people are starting to take notice this year, but go back and review his numbers, outside of the crappy W-L record, he has been very, very good. The White Sox are terrible, so hopefully we can trick them into thinking one of our non-prospects is a prospect and get him.
Either way, best to get some depth, though I think if Sanchez doesn't show signs of fatigue, he stays in the rotation.

weird lineup today
DH Bautista
3B Donaldson
1B Encarnacion
LF Upton Jr.
CF Pillar
2B Travis
RF Carrera
SS Barney
C Thole
Seems pointless to me having Bautista lead off in games Thole plays. Just have Travis or Upton lead off.

The lineup makes sense to me..
The speed game that Upton might have (first to third, etc) is completely negated if Thole is in front of them and can only advance one base at a time. Having the power bats behind him, where speed doesn't matter, is smart IMO.

It's remarkable how bunched together and competitive the top end MLB teams are the past couple of seasons. Pennant races and playoffs should be an absolute treat to watch.
As a long time Blue Jays fan, I still complain about t-hole, Dickey, and Rogers some, but I have to admit that watching this team the past two seasons has been basically everything I ever dreamed about in the middle of the deep mediocrity times of the 20 prior years.

I've really enjoyed Bautista leading off to be honest. Put the best 3 batters at the top of the line-up and don't give the other starter any time to settle in. Yesterday's game was a great example. Jose gets on and then a bomb makes it 2-0 before anyone is out. It's a great way to start the game.

I don't know how many games the bullpen has blown, but you have to think if they win half of those blown games then they would have at least 2 or 3 more wins then anyone else.

It is a weird lineup... but not because of Bautista leading off. Bautista get's on base which should be the principle skill of the leadoff hitter. Whats weird is that Upton and Carrera are drawing in. Unless there has been a change the Jays are facing off against a RHP... Upton and Carrera have worse splits (career and this season) against righties. Also Barney in for Tulo? Strange.
The only way I can explain it is that they want to rest some guys (Saunders/Tulo) and want to be extra careful with Bautista's foot (no fielding).

Would that comment not apply to basically all of the other top teams as well? Over the course of 162 games each team is going to have a sizable number of games that got away and games that they came back to win in. Especially when no team has a win percentage above .600.

Every team blows games in the late innings. Yeah, Toronto's bullpen hasn't been really good (although it's probably been better then you think it' been) statistically the Jays bullpen is average range by most measures.

The Jays bullpen has blown around 20 games this year (I think they hit the 20 mark a week or two ago but would need to look it up.
How is that average? It's brutal. Hopefully adding Morales and Benoit is going to help fix, but there can be no sugar coating of their performance to date this year.
