Staples took that bait and wrote an article that said top Oiler insider confirms a deal is done.
My belief and my guess is someone fantasizing that this deal will get done.

If I were Stauffer I would be pretty ticked off with how Staples reported this.
What an absolute hack.

If Staples is such an insider, why doesn't he get the scoop himself, straight from the DryPiddle camp?

Best case scenario they lock Draisaitl, McDavid & Bouchard for 14m, 16m, 10m respectively and have 40m (49.25 with Nurse) locked up for 7 years. They get one more kick at the can next year while not addressing their D or Goaltending. After that they wander the desert as a low seed playoff team for the next 6 years winning a couple rounds here and there but not seeing contender status again until after their next several rebuilds in the 2030s.

The player has his own side but I highly doubt Draisaitl even knows who Staples is, let alone reads his basement blogging. The Oilers badly want to put it out there that they will have no issues keeping Draisaitl and McDavid to fan the flames of other markets discussing them as trade or UFA targets. I'm sure Katz and everyone in that building has recurring nightmares of going through what the Flames did with Gaudreau and Tkachuk.

I think has to ask McCurdy to call Spec to see what Gene heard from Gregor when talking to Wilkins.

My best case scenario is Connor leaves. Like it or not he’s an absolutely amazing hockey player and actually seems to improve year over year, and has been incredibly durable too. Given his track record it would not be surprising to see him pull a flawed roster to a cup win, especially with there he got last year. At some point he’ll regress but I wouldn’t be surprised if his next few years he continues to mature and see further career bests. I want him out of there. Edmonton is no good but realistically he seems to take another step each year.

Barring major injuries, I don't see regression for McDavid until he's in his mid-30's. Those wheels will keep him on top for a long time. If he lands in a quality organization with a solid supporting cast and elite goaltending, watch out.

Playing 30 minutes night in your mid 20's and and 30's is going to be significantly different for him.
I have no clue about his training, he looked dead at the end of Game 7.

I just hope that he never stops trying to force fancy plays 1-2 and never figures out a 200 foot game.

So did every member of the 2004 Calgary Flames in game 7 of the finals. The playoffs are a long slog for everyone involved.

I would think the NHL/ESPN as a whole would prefer McDavid was in a better market where not only more local/regional attention can be gained, but the organization can actually capitalize off of having a player like him, and ensure McDavid has several more deep playoff runs to come.

Yeah it would be huge to get McDavid in a big US market. Gretzky in LA did a lot for the NHL and the league and while McDavid isn't as big a name in the USA as Gretzky was, adding him to say a Metropolitan team would likely provide a large TV ratings boost and drive some rivalries up. McDavid spending his entire career in Edmonton would be terrible for the NHL.

I know Oilers fans will push the hometown discount to win a cup, but I feel the NHLPA will have a say in the contracts too. With the cap expected to grow exponentially in the next few years, they’ll want to make sure the players get their fair share and can’t have two of the best players in the world taking discounts and lowering the comparable for other players down the road.
Draisaitl is going to get no less than $14M in my opinion
McDavid will probably push closer to $16M
And I don’t see how Bouchard signs for less than $10M with Nurse making $9.25M
Add that up, Oilers paying $49.25M for 4 players or close to 50% of the cap.

Again, whatever team these guys are on, that team becomes a cup favourite. So why sign somewhere for less, when you can take more and be in the same position.
And not have to live in Edmonton.
