His entire arc was so well written, even his Saturday morning cartoon villain phase makes sense in the emotional context of why he went off the deep end and the story context of over-arching star trek lore.
DS9 is a masterpiece.

I always wondered if his other number of children were mad that it was Ziyal's death that sent him over the edge, and like not what was going on with them.

I think they were fine. Probably convinced themselves it was the loss of the station for a second time that broke him... because I've always been of the opinion it was "losing to the Bajorans" twice that broke him, Ziyal's death just amplified it quicker.
I am projecting onto Gul Dukat's daughter.

The other contestant was Kim.
"But mine is powering this ship right now!"
- "Shut up Ensign Kim! Get me a coffee!"

I understandably stopped watching Voyager about halfway through season two. Why are they hosting a children's science fair?

If there's one character in the *Star Trek* universe who deserves an official apology letter from Starfleet Command and a long-overdue promotion ceremony with all the fanfare of a Vulcan ambassadorial reception, it's Ensign Harry Kim. Let’s be real—by the time *Voyager* limped back into the Alpha Quadrant, scarred, tired, and triumphant after seven harrowing years in the Delta Quadrant, Harry had endured more trauma, near-death experiences, temporal anomalies, transporter malfunctions, and alien abductions than most admirals see in an entire career. He held the operations of an isolated starship together in the middle of nowhere with no support from Starfleet, maintained a stoic professionalism despite constant brushes with death, and even commanded missions with competence and clarity. And yet, the man never rose above the rank of Ensign. Not once. No pip added. Not even a provisional field promotion like Chakotay or Tuvok. Nothing.
The irony is sharp when you look around at who *did* get promoted—or at least reinstated. Tom Paris, who literally started the series as a convict, got demoted and re-promoted before Harry ever touched a second pip. Seven of Nine, an ex-Borg with a staggering learning curve when it came to human social interaction, regularly took command of critical missions. B'Elanna Torres, brilliant and volatile, became chief engineer. Tuvok, already a seasoned Lieutenant Commander, operated with all the calm logic of his rank. Even Neelix got an ambassadorial title, despite his complete lack of Federation credentials. And what of Harry? The guy saved the ship, held the crew together, and consistently performed under pressure—yet remained perpetually at the bottom rung of the ladder.
What makes this especially baffling is that Harry Kim wasn’t some green cadet fresh out of the Academy by the time Voyager returned. He had, by any standard, *field experience* equivalent to at least a Lieutenant Commander. He served in every kind of mission—from diplomacy to first contact to combat. He was frequently the voice of reason and moral center when things went sideways. He held command on the bridge during red alerts. He engineered life-saving solutions in crises. He even died. More than once. And came back! That’s devotion to duty beyond the call.
Let’s not forget the behind-the-scenes meta-irony, either: Garrett Wang, who portrayed Kim, was the youngest member of the main cast and often campaigned for his character to grow, evolve, and yes—get promoted. But the writers, for reasons unknown even to the Q Continuum, kept him static. It's almost become a running joke among fans, but beneath the humor lies a real sense of injustice. This wasn’t just a case of a character being overlooked—it was emblematic of a missed opportunity to reward loyalty, bravery, and competence. Harry Kim *earned* that promotion ten times over.
So when the end credits rolled on *Voyager* and the ship finally slipped back into Earth orbit, you’d expect a little ceremony for the guy who survived being duplicated, phased out of existence, killed in action, and used as the communications lifeline to Earth. Instead, nothing. No brass pin. No handshake. No commendation. Just a tired Ensign, quietly stepping off the bridge he helped protect for seven long years. If anyone deserved a promotion—not just as recognition of rank but as a symbol of everything Starfleet stands for—it was Harry Kim.

My understanding of 'The Kim Phenomenon' is that Wang didnt get along with the writers, he was even hours away from being fired but, and excuse me if the details aren't perfect, but the day before he was about to be let go he got on the cover of a magazine?
So the optics would have been bad and that saved his job.
But writers hold a grudge.

Ensign Kim should have been drummed from the service and beamed into space for too much time in grade.
Fact is that you have to be a fairly high level Fnut to not get a promotion from ensign in all that time. Hell I hear that Ensign Scruffy who job was to scrub Janeways toilet got promoted to Lt.
