I think the "trade Hudler" ship is starting to set sail. Hudler has been terrible this year. I don't know why anyone would want him.

Hudler has zero trade value if he has a nagging "lower body injury".

Based on his skating i'm guessing one of those "sport hernia" type injuries that requires offseason surgery.

Apparently Drouin asked for a trade out of TB in November. He was sent down to Syracuse a few days ago.

Montreal media speculating Hudler is of interest to the Habs. December 19 article.

http://www.lapresse.ca/sports/hockey...-lethargie.php

The Flames have won their Game 7 Thursday on, so much so that they would participate in the series if they were starting today. They gave themselves a record of 10-3-1 in their last 14 games without Hudler is central to such success. A virus caused him to miss two games, Bob Hartley was cut off at a third, and he had to settle for 5 points in 11 games. Hudler, who knew the season of his career last year with 31 goals and 76 points (including 60 at even strength), is no longer at the heart of scoring chances for his team as last year. He was seen especially with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan at the beginning of the season, but especially changes with Sam Bennett and Markus Granlund by these days. The result: his playing time dropped last month. When looking at the source of his shots, we note that it was much more involved in goal last year. At 5 '10 and have not always had the best defensive reputation, he really has the profile that the Canadian research?

Yzerman not having the best year, team struggling, looking likely to lose Stamkos

now Drouin's agent making the trade request public

Yzerman should be fairly familiar with Hudler, Yzerman was still in the org when Huds was there right... Sven was a first rounder and fetched a 2nd, I guess Sven was 13th overall and Drouin like 3rd or something. Maybe Hulder and a second gets it done. Don't really know how well Drouin has been developing. Does it look like he will live up to the hype?

Evander Kane disagrees. Whilst I appreciate that they are different players in different stages of their careers, an injury doesn't mean a player has zero value. Hudler still has value.

Except Buffalo didn't want a player coming back that would help them win last year, they wanted a player to help them win down the road. Kane was perfect for their play for first overall pick last year.

As RT14 says this is a whole different situation. Sure Hudler has value but being a probably injured UFA his value to a team hoping to make a run in the playoffs is close to zero.

Yeah he did well but the fact is that it isn't good how MSL and that franchise parted ways. But perhaps one of Yzerman's strengths is he appears to be pretty ruthless.
But when you have two "faces of the franchise" seemingly wanting out (MSL and now Stamkos) and the "future face" in Drouin - you have to wonder what's going on.

Also have to wonder if Yzerman lucked into that trade. He may have won it, but would he still have made it or even looked into it if St. Louis didn't ask out (NTC/NMC aside).

My understanding is MSL demanded a trade to the New York area for family reasons. The animosity developed either as a result of St.Louis not being picked for Team Canada and/or that Yzerman didn't trade him in a timely fashion following the trade request.

I do think he is a little ruthless which seems like a pretty good quality in a GM. (Think NE Patriots).

But having this stuff out in public is not what he wants as you'd think it only weakens his bargaining position. Unlike the Patriots, where there never seems to be any contrary messages making their way out of the organization.

Wasn't it revealed that MSL had asked to be traded long before the whole Olympic thing happened?

Ruthless is the future. Hockey is probably the deepest ingrained of the old boys, honor bound, do right by my people attitude but that type of sentimentality gets you nothing in a salary cap league.

I've been saying this for years but the model is the NFL where ruthlessness reigns. You simply don't have the room for sentimentality when you're governed by an uncompromising hard call in a zero sum league. Either you have players performing over or under the value of their contract and the teams with the best ratio of those players are the ones who contend.
