- Darryl is one of my favourite characters; and I think he is strong enough to carry an episode.
- All kinds of "change of scenery" that everybody was asking for. None of this asking why the grass is mowed 2 years after the ZA. In fact the special effects team did a great job showing the decay, the after effects of the napalm- right down to the decay of the vehicles on I-85 since season 1.
- We got some glimpses into how people in urban situations survived with the +15 campground. (Until they were shot in their sleep.)
- Some great movement in the story. Where Carol went from wanting to kill Noah to pleading with Darryl to save him. This right after she said that she didn't think we could save people any more; Darryl made her realize that wasn't true.

It was cool to see "Rick's tank" again.
I would really like it if they looked in on the Vatos again. I wonder how they survived if they did.
I also like the dropped book for surviving child abuse. It appears to be Daryll's, part of his new start.

I think there were plans to show this in Season 2. From what I remember reading, they were supposed to visit them in the first episode but find the place overrun.
But at the same time, a lot changed between when they filmed it and what they released.

Well it wasn't Beth. I enjoyed the episode, but not enough CORAL!

If I'm not mistaken, there was a scene before they left where Carol put the book into her backpack.

I could have swore the book she put in was either Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn.

Yeah I think the abuse book belongs to Big D

I never question the believability of zombies, but the van landing on its wheels looked so fake. This is how it would actually land.

Nothing gets me more excited than a Carol episode! And yeah, I literally laughed out loud at the Van landing on it's wheels.

I dunno, that van had a running start. Teetering off the edge may give it more spin with that front heavy engine

I though the book was Daryl's. If memory serves, didn't Merle mention a time or two that he was beaten by his dad? I also seem to recall he was quite concerned about Daryl for the same reason.

Also liked the episode. Only poorly executed part, IMO, was the van landing right side up so perfectly.

In the Talking Dead they said the child abuse book was Darryl's, Carol had a Huck Finn book (IIRC) that Hershel had given Lizzy at the prison.

I never even picked up on those people being shot in their sleeping bags, crazy.
I also thought it was a good episode and tied those end of episode cliff hangers together well. It was a bit rushed at the end, but now at least this season has a purpose leading up to the break, saving Carol and Beth.

I think what I find most frustrating about these episodes rich in backstory and character development is the lack of subtlety sometimes. I would have preferred that they left it to the viewer to figure out why Carol was so familiar with the shelter. We didn't need the soliloquy spelling it out for us.
My second biggest frustration is that in these mini-half seasons we are forced to endure, there is not enough time to devote whole episodes to these things. There is a limited number of episodes before the mid-season break and fans (well, me at least) demand a certain amount of story progression and walker gore each week. You have to walk a fine line between artful character driven stuff and basic action to make this happen. There's a danger if you drift too far one way (like the episodes last season where we followed one of the smaller groups on their way to Terminus) or the other (like the episode where the group escaped Terminus twenty minutes into the show, or where Garreth and the rest of the Hunters were dispatched two episodes into the season) or you just plain go off on a stupid little fancy trying to give depth to a cartoon like the Governor.

I think this has been the best season thus far, almost perfection.
The Beth episode was pretty boring, but everything that came before it was awesome. The last two episodes have had that perfect balance between character driven moments and enough action/intensity to keep the pacing high.
As was said in the Talking Dead: Every time something bad happens to part of the group or somewhere else in the story and the reaction is "we better go get Rick," I get excited. His progression into a morally ambiguous badass started in the mid-season finale of season 2, where he walked out (dressed in all black) and shot the little zombie girl in the face. Since then, it's been slow at times, with a bit of struggle, but it's come together really nicely. I'm even enjoying Carl now, who was hard to deal with over the last two seasons.

The van falling on the wheels was pretty silly...agreed. The other thing that drove me crazy about that was, what? One of two walkers came after the van? I'm pretty sure from what we've seen so far, the horde would have just followed them down. I expected to see it raining walkers after the van hit the ground.

It did. They showed 1 hit the windshield, then about 20 more thumps as the other walkers fell on the van.
Plus there were a ton laying around when D&C got out of the van.

Hmmm...I heard a little noise and one hit the windshield, but even when they got out, I didn't see any of the bodies on the roof or the ground.
