They aren't necessarily looking out for the patient first. You don't produce to their expectations, they aren't happy. Only one way to make that up.
I dunno, I just can't see how this is really viable. You can always switch dentists, there's lots that follow the fee guide.

DNTL barely makes any money and their stock performance sucks. I can't even imagine how they'd buy practices and make money from it. They'd buy a practice at maybe 1X revenue? Probably mix of cash and stock? Terrible for the dentist, terrible for DNTL.

Edit: probably not even close to 1X rev. Probably $100K or thereabouts. Even then a total waste of money.

Their numbers suck but they keep buying practices at multiples way more than 1X revenue. I can't figure it out either
I think DNTL regrets the day they went public. Rumours that they have tried to go back to private but hasn't happened yet. 123Dentist is entirely privat

My dentist is in mission. That Russian couple?

He used to be at Mission Dental, this was like 28 years ago though, probably retired, he was in his 50s when I was there.

That's insane. Like literally nuts. Gotta be mostly stock, dentists make a ton of revenue but very little if any earnings since they're essentially a personal services business model.

I had a ####ty dentist in my youth and now my teeth are ####ed. I had invisalign as a teenager and the dentist said I wasn't getting any wisdom teeth. Well at 24 my wisdom teeth started coming in and pushed my teeth a bit out of alignment - not so bad. I got them pulled at 28 and then found out that the 4 years my wisdom teeth were slowly coming in messed up my bite and causing my teeth to chip from being out of alignment. I was quoted $38,000 for 3 years of braces and jaw surgery.

Now I just live with my ####ty teeth (not terrible, but not great)

Optometry has been corporate for quite some time now. However, there is about 10-11 big corporate groups in the space now. A lot of the below groups trade on stock exchanges or have big Private Equity groups behind them.

Luxottica group:
Lenscrafters
Clearly
Pearle Vision
Others:
FYIdoctors
IRIS
Specsavers
Bailey-Nelson
Oscar Wylee
Second Specs
Costco
Walmart
Superstore (Soon to all be Specsavers)

Interestingly enough, there is a recent flood of new Independent places opening up (including my own). Doctors leaving bigger practices/chains to do their own thing. One of the things that really has helped Independents is the ability to actually find your favorite practitioner once they leave where they are at. Also, a lot of legacy practices are asking outrageous amounts to be "partner" or to buy them out. If you can spend less to open your own place then that is preferrable, especially now that patients can find you easier than in the past.

Already closed in fact. And weirdly cryptic in their announcement. As if they were kicked out of Avenida.

Yeah the announcement sounded pretty salty. I am guessing steep rent increase they couldn't afford

Corporate dental businesses can streamline hiring staff and optimizing them across multiple offices, negotiate better prices from suppliers based on higher volumes, deal with landlords regarding rent and improvements, centralize administrative processes and marketing and collections, and they have the capital to be able to offer the sole practitioner dentist who is eyeing retirement a sweet deal and easy transition rather than that dentist having to conduct a search for a successor. Sure the corporation is probably more focused on the bottom line, but they also bring a lot of advantages to the table for a dentist who just wants to be a dentist and not an entrepreneur Jack-of-all-trades.
