That 8th year put other teams out of the running. They'd have had to give him 9.8 to match the dollars. That plus the cup effect.

And the tax effect, and the flip-flops in January effect…

The owner Viola told him that he's the soul of the team, I don't see him going anywhere. Maybe 6.5M x 8?

Verhaeghe might be the soul, but Bennett is the heart. Chucky is the personality and Barky is the backbone.

Yeah the eight year is the seal. Florida will in the end pay the piper by handing out these long term deals but I doubt they care what happens in 6-7 years from now.

The saddest part of the entire thing is Bennett liked playing under Sutter and didn't want to be traded anymore.

Quote:
Several months after his trade demand went public, Sam Bennett was singing a different tune Wednesday.
Asked if he has altered his stance, he spoke glowingly of Darryl Sutter, who came in last month and saddled the Calgary Flames winger with slightly more ice time and responsibility than Geoff Ward did.
"I’m happy playing under Darryl," said Bennett. "I think I’ve gotten more opportunity and I’ve been able to play my game a little bit more."
Has the new coach breathed new life into him, in terms of how he looks at his future in Calgary?
"Ya, absolutely," he said. "I want to have a big role and important role to help this team win. When I’m playing more I’m playing better and can help the team have success. It definitely makes it fun and makes me enjoy coming to the rink when I have a big role. I’ve definitely been in a better mindset."

I always got the impression that the "resurgence" under Sutter was just an attempt by both sides to pump up Bennett's value prior to a trade. By that point the decision was already made by both sides to move on.

Players don't want to pump up their trade value, they want to play well and win.

Assisted on the game winner and then scored the insurance goal tonight. 8 goals, 12 points in 11 games.

What an absolute L for the Flames organization. I’m so happy Treliving is gone.

Anton Lindell has two centres ahead of him as well, but he still has a top nine roll with significant Power play time. Technically Lindell has three centres ahead of him but Florida has found a way to get good quality players playing time together while still giving players like him ice time and a chance to develop.
Or your GM can sign Joakim Nordstrom I guess.

If Bennett leaves the Panthers his numbers will return to what they were like in Calgary.

Well, it was indirectly. Bennett returned Heineman and a 2nd.
The 2nd was traded away, along with a 3rd and a 7th for Jarnkrok.
Heineman, a 1st, a 5th, and Tyler Pitlick went to Montreal for Toffoli- who was later traded to NJ for Sharangovich, and a 3rd (Suniev).
