Bahl is what he is, a bottom pairing dman for a team that needs NHL bodies.
He won't change the fortunes of this team.
But with this defense and a Wolf/Vladar tandem - this could be a bottom 5 team.
That's what changes the fortunes.

If he was only willing to waive to go to NJD, then what do you do about it?

No way any of the players live in Newark.

Matty kind of ruined this trade for me lol. I totally thought the Panthers had to get a top ten pick for it not to transfer.

This is probably going to sound hypocritical, but the last few teams in the finals have had bigger backends. Conroy even mentioned it in his interview the one he said Markstrom doens't want a trade a few days ago.
Vegas was big. Tampa was big. Colorado was semi big. Florida has size.

I'd reckon Bahl would certainly hold more value than that since he is two years younger, and not arbitration eligible like Zadorov was. A large reason Zadorov was moved at all in the first place was due to his contract situation.

Zadorov was getting paid more and closer to UFA status. More proven at the time of the deal. Bahl IMO is similar but worth slightly more.
Another point, most of us liked Zadorov while he was here despite the not-so-great stats before he got here?

Wait I am confused now. How can there be a condition the Flames pick being top ten if Florida's pick doesn't transfer if it is a lottery pick.

Well if Bahl was a RFA that required a 3.2 million dollar qualifying offer and eventually signed for 3.75 million the comparison would be accurate. Bahl makes 1.05 million so whatever the value of the 2.7 million is should also be added to his value if you are using Zadorov as the comparable.

What were the other offers on Markstrom? What were the extenuating circumstances?
The Flames don’t get to unilaterally make up the value of their players.
The Flames did well here and none of us, or 99.8% truly know what the Flames could have got now or prior to.
…stop pretending.
|
Well, to be fair:
Tanev - a 1st round pick was offered
Hanifin - got a 1st
Lindholm - got a 1st
Zadorov - don't know if I ever thought we'd get a 1st for him.
Toffoli - 100% expected a 1st.
Backlund - we re-signed
None of us know what the other offers were. I've been pretty clear in this thread, I'm good with the return - it was specifically the $4M'ish in retention that I thought might have been a determining factor somewhere along the way.
34 year old returns a 1st? I'm happy with that. $4M retention? I guess that's where Bahl balances it a bit.

Ha sorry man. Just really lean into the Cats fandom. I do genuinely think that it's unlikely they miss the playoffs with the crew they have, but am a bit worried about it with how badly they are tanking in the finals now and the kind of marks that could leave. But immensely talented team.

Interestingly if somehow the Flames finish ahead of the Panthers next year. And the Devils finish bottom 10 again, they are currently holding 4 unprotected 2026 1sts.
Not something I think will happen, but it's interesting.
If you also look at UFAs and cap space, there is probably an outside chance they could acquire 1 or 2 more if they were determined to.

Tampa was the 1st to kind of have a couple high end dmen with a bunch of huge dmen behind their skill guys. Definitely a trend since. I'm a huge fan of what our d is looking like for the future. Low cap hit guys too.
