And over that time (the same age that Hanifin will be on the new contract), when he was putting up those big numbers, he was nothing like Hanifin. I just don't see the comparison.

But it isn't resulting in the team being competitive.
I am not saying he isn't a good player, I am saying what's the point in re-signing him at that price? The team isn't getting it done as is. Reset and move on.

There really is no better time to sell.
- set the market with Lindy trade
- will set the market with the Tanev trade
- have a starter goalie with term playing lights out with a market in need of goaltending
- Hanifin playing great hockey and could command a lot, potential sign and trade could command quite a bit
- have some attractive 1 year left contracts in Mangiapane, Backlund
- 2025 draft is set to be a good one
- would hasten a retool
Kinda of unreal to see it time out like it is, looking forward to seeing what Conroy does with the opportunity!

The Flames are in a very commanding spot within the trade market, for the first time I can remember.
Also have those 3 retention slots to play with too. Tons of ammo to get creative with

I would re-sign him because it takes years for dmen to develop into top 4 dmen in the NHL. Without him the Flames have two and maybe Kylington has an outside chance to get there. Nobody else on the current roster has that potential IMO. Anyone not in the NHL will take a minimum of 3 years to get there. It almost never happens that a Poirier comes to the NHL and is a top 4 guy off the hop. Trading Hanifin almost locks in another 3 years of being a bottom 5-10 team in the league. That may be a good thing but that is what trading him almost ensures IMO.
Could all be moot if the intel Sec has is accurate.

Man so true, cupboards could be very well stocked when all is said and done and I’m really intrigued to see what kind of current roster players we get back to go along with the picks/prospects. So far Sharky and Kuzmenko have been awesome roster players to have coming back, Conroy has done well and hasn’t even really gotten started yet.

I'm fine with that ... I lean to dealing him too.
Won't be upset if they sign him though, as he is the guy I'd choose to sign if I had to pick one.
I do have fear of trading too much and then going Buffalo for the next 12 years.

The Oilers/ Buffalo are worst case scenarios. I view this more like going New York Rangers.

If this is handled properly, this could honestly jumpstart a retool extremely well. Quite a bit of intruging pieces for other teams here
Conroy has an incredible opportunity to set this franchise in the right direction

I think the thing is "that price" is the equivalent of $5M a few years ago and it's going to look even better in 3 years from now. Though I'm no cap expert.
His hit is 5.9% now - arguably too low. The expectation for 25-26 is a cap of 92M and that's as far as I've seen projected. So $7.5 will be an overpay if his value to the team is the same. But maybe not as much as people think.

He is similar. His role as a minute eating all around defender with good mobility and size, was similar, it's just that his production just improved with the team's production. His powerplay points percentage is very similar to Hanifin's. He's never been a go to defenceman for points.

Agreed. And until recently, that was keeping me on the I'm-fine-with-signing-him side of the fence. What has changed my mind is:
1) Kylington - never thought we would see him playing again
2) Solovyov and Pachal - bottom 6 guys at best, but good enough to get us through the next couple years.
3) more D prospects - Morin and Brzustewicz are on a completely different level than hoping for Poirier and Kuznetsov to develop
4) with the cap space we'll have next year, there is plenty of room for a couple of UFAs to top up the team and get them through the next couple years
With Weegar and Andersson leading the way, having a decent-enough D core should be doable.

Yeah minus being the single most attractive market for UFAs.

Servalli was reacting to fan submitted trades and he liked this one for both teams:
Wpg:
Tanev (50% retained)
Cgy:
Mtl's 2024 2nd round pick
Logan Stanley
The deal would be interesting because Montreal's 2nd could be a very early 2nd round pick, maybe the best 2nd rounder available.

Taking a while to get to 5000

What number did his brother wear in Winnipeg? Fans may not even have to get a new jersey.

Yeah, the Rangers retool was built on trades and UFA signings lol. They aren't a model for the Flames. Carolina or Dallas is the model

I've seen Jets fans pissed on Twitter that they waived and lost Chisholm because they thought he was better than Stanley, sooo ...

Now if he is choosing to test UFA then yeah, they have to deal him. They are losing a really good player though and one that is going to be almost impossible to replace internally and will cost a bundle to replace other ways.
|
For me it come down to the question of - what is Hanifin without Tanev? It's kind of similar to the Gaudreau - Monahan question, but which of the two D is the straw that stirs the drink on that pairing?
I have questions about Hanifin's ability to shut down top guys when he's not paired with Tanev. Hanifin - Weegar was terrible when Andersson was suspended.
Hanifin Andersson often has Hanifin reverting to a more defensive role. That results in less offense from Hanifin. Also, that pairing really struggled at shutting down EDM in the playoffs. Which reaulted in Hanifin having a +/- of minus 11. They also had a couple of good years together, but somehow that pairing unraveled when the games got tough.
At a 7.5 cap hit I would love Hanifin to be able to drive his own pairing, and have more chemistry with the RD we have. Hanifin is a pretty good D, and having guys like Oesterle and DeSimone in the lineup made me really appreciate what he does, but I want him to take another step to be worth that 7.5 number.
