Jordan Thompson defeated Alex Zverev in a midnight thriller at the oasis in Los Cabos. Of course that means HAPPY ZVEREV ELIMINATION DAY EVERYONE!!

I remember years ago when Winsport made a master plan update, that they had a tennis centre planned west of the Markin Centre. I wonder if there's any interest in that still, considering it would be a good accessible location for NW Calgary residence, as well as those who are in Springbank and Bearspaw.
The city as a whole could definitely use another facility; ideally in the North.

The good folks down in San Diego gave Marina Stakusic a qualification wild card for their WTA 500 event and she recorded a win over Maria Timofeeva 6-2 3-0 (ret). She takes on Elsa Jacquemot and with one more win would make the main draw.

Marina makes the main draw in San Diego with a 6-3 6-4 win over Elsa Jacquemot. That's fantastic.

Shapo loses to Andy Murray in three sets after winning the opening set. Congrats to Andy, but still the same old Denis, too many double faults, too many unforced errors and not enough patience.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is the end for Denis. Is he going to be the type of player that's willing to spend the coming years grinding at challenger events because that's where his career is heading.

The knee injury that put him on the shelf for the second half of 2023 was the first serious one of his career, but he's just not in a good space mentally at the moment. It doesn't really matter if you're working a regular job or sports is your livelihood, if you're not enjoying what you're doing, you're not going to put forth your best effort. I think Denis needs to find that love for playing tennis because right now he's getting very little joy from taking the court (at least that's my take on things).

By the way, electronic line calling needs to be the norm at all high level ATP/WTA and grand slam events (maybe clay should be exempt, I think the technology is good enough for clay, but there is a clear mark that can be checked).

Marina Stakusic wins her opening round match in San Diego and vaults up 62 places in the WTA live rankings.

The serve is the most important shot in tennis and when you don't have a reliable serve, it just puts too much pressure on the rest of your game. 9 double faults last night for Felix.

for once I'd like to know whether the serve is something these guys are actively working on. Unless Felix or Denis are in the midst of a service motion change, wasting years trying to overcome such a built-in handicap is just silly.

Yeah, I just don't get it. Zverev used to lead the tour in double faults and fixed his serve, Sabalenka had the serving yips and her coach fixed her technique. Sinner has changed his serve multiple times (from platform to pinpoint stance).
I mean, at this point, you might as well try to make changes in-season because what do you have to lose (you're already losing matches).

I think it's time for Felix to really consider some coaching changes sooner rather than later.

I've been on the train for over 2 years now, in retrospect, the worst thing that happened to Felix is winning those three tourneys in late 2022, I think that convinced him to stick with Fontang.

There gets to be a point in any player's career where they need a new voice and perspective. I feel Felix was at that point last year.

Felix needs to bring in Agassi as his coach, help him get some swagger back.
