It will be a hot button issue in the next lockout whenever that happens.
NTC mostly hurt small market Canadian teams. I doubt most owners are bothered by them. So it’s hard to see the board of governors fighting NTCs in the next collective bargaining agreement for the sake of a handful of mostly Canadian teams.

What terrible timing this year to try and sell players. Reminds me of the Feaster year when he declared Calgary "open for business" to weaponize cap space, only for the market to be non-existent as compliance buyouts created a tonne of room. I would like to blame Treliving for this, but I can't. This is just bad luck in terms of timing. I do wish that the Flames were a bit more aggressive in trying to sell a player or two at the deadline last year - would have been nice to have a few more darts for this past draft, as well as some cap space to weaponize.

It is what it is for now. One thing we can count on is how desperate GMs become. Eventually injuries will happen, and Hanifin might be the best defencemen on the market (especially given his team-friendly contract). Smooth skating, mistake-free minute-munchers capable of playing on a top pairing are always in demand. I have no doubt that Calgary will trade Hanifin for a good return at some point, and if they decide to move on from Backlund, him as well.

Yeah bad timing I suppose but you can create your own opportunity too. Prices were crazy high at the deadline and Flames chose to stand pat. And presumably they had indications that some of these guys had no interest in re-signing. You can’t always be a victim of circumstances. But as you say, you can only control what you do from this point forward.

Conroy has really shown to be a crappy manager. All the made up crap in my head that he didn't execute pisses me right off.

Good. If people are dicking around, save him for a mid season trade when teams are more desperate or a big injury happens. Not wishing for a team to have a big injury.. it is just inevitable.

Don't set the bar low for future negotiations.

If you want to sign UFA's or UFA's to be, GM's need to sign them to be competitive. I don't think it saves them any money, as it's simply expected.

I doubt it's a real issue, as there is zero chance the players budge on this issue, now that they have it.

We really have zero clue about what is really going on in each individual situation.

We do know that cap is king these days, and it's hard to move cap, even decent cap.

And for teams to give up real value for guys like Hanifin and Lindholm, those guys will require 8 year contracts at 2024 UFA price and teams are balking at that. So that will slow those deals down.

So I have no idea if Conroy is doing a good job or not.

I would say that Buffalo, with the draft past and having lots of cap space, is going to see if they can lure in a UFA or two first -- I see them pursuing a players like Dumba and/or Graves, maybe Gudas (though after the Panthers playoff run some idiot GM will probably gift him a long and expensive contract, hopefully not us). See how that goes and then maybe loop back around on Hanifin later if we don't have much success, lol.

not surprised that GMs will try to take advantage of the new guy. I'm glad the Flames are being patient ... I'd rather make no deal than a bad deal, especially at this point where there is zero rush.

But I am a bit surprised that players like Hanifin or Lindholm seemingly don't have a huge market right now. I figured with a weak UFA class and the opportunity to re-sign them long term, the Flames would have got some great offers by now. Oh well. Worst case*, you keep most of the upcoming UFAs till the deadline and start a fire sale then ... I always thought the likes of Backlund, Zadorov and Tanev might make for better deadline chips anyway.

* well, actually worst case is being "in the hunt" then and refusing to sell, but after the Gaudreau situation, I have to believe they've since learned a lesson or two ...

If the offers are just other pending UFA's, then what's the point? You might as well keep Hanifin till the trade deadline, when 1st rounders are worth the least as contending teams load up. Just don't get sucked into not trading him at the deadline.

I don't even think it is really a matter at this point of other GMs trying to take advantage of the new guy. Lots of teams haven't made the moves that they wanted to make as well. Debrincat hasn't moved either. Karlsson with rumored retention hasn't moved. I think the market is simply a very difficult one.

Jay Feaster would have pulled the trigger on a 3rd and cap dump and sell it to us like we won the lottery.

I think Conroy's experience with the crappy management of Feaster and Burke canning him for being a pushover really is helping his cause being patient and not taking garbage offers.

He has even commented on how bad the Dion trade was getting back a bunch of nothing instead of getting value back.

I think we are forgetting that last year’s acquisition prize Tkachuk also returned two pending UFA’s so the situation really isn’t that different.

Hanifin is no where close to the player Tkachuk is so the return is going to reflect that. Coupled with the tight cap and this creates a weak sellers market.

What screwed the Flames last year was signing the two UFA’s immediately and not holding and trading them at the deadline for first round picks.

If Conroy can’t get long term pieces in exchange for the UFA’s, then he HAS to sell them at the deadline for futures. The only exception is if they are in first place and look legit, and even then, I few like you still need to at least move some of them for long term assets.

I wonder if there’s a deal to be made with the Flyers?

Flames actually do want to sign Hanifin, it’s the player that is not interested.

Flyers want to move on from Sanheim as he doesn’t fit their window.

Maybe Flames should trade Hanifin to the Flyers who will happily trade him at the deadline for a first cause they are in a rebuild. Flames get the Flyers to maybe eat some of Sanheim’s contract, maybe $1 million of it?

Both teams get what they want. Flames won’t also be stuck in the position of selling at the deadline.
