The backlash over the joke is dumb, but it’s not surprising. A lot of people simply don’t get or like standup comedy. They feel it’s too mean. Or it’s fine when the target of a joke is someone they hate, but they turn into humourless scolds when they disapprove of the target.
What is really astonishing, though, is how someone was struck in the face while doing their job in public, and they’re not considered the victim of the incident. That people can twist themselves into such knots trying to strike a pose as defenders of decency that an act of actual violence gets disregarded.
I didn't interpret it as making fun of her medical condition, but "making lemonade"/ looking at the lighter side of her current appearance. To me, hearing a Gi Jane joke about a bald woman would be like making a friendly "Arrr Matey, now we can call you a pirate" joke to humor someone who hurt their leg.
I was also surprised so many people thought it was fake.
I was impressed by Rocks reaction afterward. He regained his composure so quickly. You could tell he was shocked it happened, especially as he fumbled for a second before getting back on track for his presentation.
It's almost funny how many people, especially women who you'd think normally would be against toxic masculinity were like "good for you Will, standing up and defending your woman"
That was the composure of a man who has been bitch-slapped before.
He has experience.
And I'm laughing at whatever person brought up 'Hood Rules.'
Seriously? Their 'Hood' is Beverley Hills and these are their rules.
A guy just got assaulted on Live TV and the guy who did it is going to suffer exactly no legal consequences because he is Rich and Famous.
Those....those are the 'Hood Rules.'

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Also, especially given the context that these are two rich guys, that "hood rules" thing actually does sound pretty racist to me. What is the thinking there - this would be a problem if they were white, but they're black so we should have different (read: lower) standards and expectations for their behaviour, and just expect that they'll be more violent than people with a different skin colour? That.... someone has not though through the implications here.

It is for sure. If someone like like Mel Gibson went up there and smacked a comedian, the reaction would have universally been "how dare he behave in that manner".

LOL yup exactly what I mean. There's always that qualifier
"I have a good sense of humour, but..."
"I love comedy, but..."
"I’m firmly of the opinion that you should be able to joke about anything, but..."
I do find it funny that these sort of qualifying statements almost always seem to precede statements that make it completely obvious the qualifier is a lie.
"I believe you should be able to joke about anything, but not everything!"
"I'm not a racist, but (insert some of the most casually racist stuff you've ever heard)."
Same crutch.

First of all, she knew it was coming and she was actually cool with it, because it wasn't about her, but her character. She knew how the business works. Plus you look at later interviews with the Rock when he was accused of fat shaming her, and he was very clear about how much she and everyone loved and respected her backstage, but how hated her character was.
Vicki was very cool with it.

Lol, tongue in cheek comment that too many of you missed.
not sure if any of you actually watched the video. It’s some of the Rock’s best work in his promos
