Could get a Calgary Flames Tattoo on his neck.... but then again those pesky Rangers might pay for laser removal.

Historically, if you look at the two NCAA kids who were traded, there's a commonality:
Brandon Hickey (2014) was a lefty defender when the team had Mark Giordano, Brett Kulak and then drafted Oliver Kylington. If you thought you could be in the NHL right away, there wasn't much of a path to a roster spot at the time.
Adam Fox (2016) was a righty defender who, seemingly, decided he wanted to play for the Rangers (Tim Erixon style). The Flames also had Rasmus Andersson and Dougie Hamilton on the team at that point, so it wasn't as if the Flames had a top four roster spot to dangle in front of him to combat his desires.
Coronato? He seems destined for top nine duties and as a right shot forward who can score goals like crazy, he's basically a unicorn in the system right now.

We complain about Francis so much, nbut he fell over himself to be the first to ask that question. Nice welcome for the kid. Embarrassing.
And you can draw a straight line from the comments in this thread to emboldening Francis to ask that question. He reads this forum and knows people were panicked.

It was a legit question to ask though, this is pro sports and a reporter covering a team that got burned doing this before.
Matthew Coronato handled it well, people need to stop complaining so much about other people venting. Let mods handle it.

Way to make the kid feel welcome, Scooter.
There’s a point where insecurities and projecting these fears onto players (or, people in general) becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. You treat someone like they’re always going to leave you and you might just make sure that happens.

Ya it’s a legit question. No shinola. But you think it is good decorum to ask that as the first question of an 18 year old? Rather than a welcoming, warm up the room question like “tell us about yourself” or “have you ever been to Calgary before”.

This was not the pick I was hoping for but I wish him all the best developing the next few years at Harvard and hope to see him light it up on the ice.

And someone did ask him what his favorite animal was that he would be, is that a better question?
I didn't see anything wrong or off about that exchange, it was a hard question I'll say that much but I don't think it was offside to ask. And Coronato handled it well, it's not like they got into a big fight about it.
A couple of the other reporters in that interview were actually worse fwiw.

Are those the only 2 options? Either ask if he’s going to leave us, or what is his favorite animal?

Get used to it!
It's all we have.
If every single decision or happening in the Flames world is spun into a negative thing on the place we go to talk about hockey we need to fight the good fight and push it back.
I agree it's a topic.
But I also know you're smart enough to know the difference between ignoring the possibility of something and literally focusing on the problem solely.
I mean couldn't you say great pick, sure it will work out, but I'm worried?
And you're not that bad. But sometimes I think the rational negative types think it's about them when really it's about the people that are baby with the bath water types that need to be pushed back on.

Yeah, just like Edmonton's first question should be "have you been to the mall?" Calgary's first questions should be "have you been to the Stampede?" Show them how polite Canadian media can be!
I agree that the first question shouldn't be about the contract situation, but based on the very recent history involved with that issue I can see why it would come up early. If the Flames didn't want this to be dealt with early, they wouldn't have gone to Francis for the question, because you know he had that one in the hopper. And for all those faux media types out there who are attacking him for it, they would have asked the exact same question. They are just pissed they didn't get the chance to ask the question that was on everyone's mind.

This is a good point. Probably better that the question got asked now as it helps the player and the team hit a common ground. It also adds clarification for the fans. I could see cp in 2 or 3 years going crazy had the question not been asked. Lets relax and enjoy the player. We got one of the best pure goal scorers in the draft, that is a lot to be excited about. On Fox, that was worth the gamble and we got something in return. Scouts got it right with Fox, just have to hit more of these out of the park.

Unfortunately Adam Fox has shown that a really good player, who could easily have left college early, can finish their prestigious education, pick their destination, and win a trophy two years later.
There’s also this...NCAA athletes can now get paid for appearances etc.
