Duhat column , Globe and Mail...

"The best way to build something, and to hope for success, is with honesty. If it doesn't start with hard work, I don't know. I never went to school, so I only know about hard work. Hard work creates standards.

"Last year, we said, 'earned, never given' – then Brad came in and he added 'always earned, never given.' When I sat with him the first time, it was great, because we talked about philosophies and it seemed as if we'd already worked three or four years together. He supports me because those are his own beliefs – and looking at his background, nobody gave him anything either."

Hartley is the original self-made man. He came to be an NHL coach through a long, circuitous path – working in the mills of his Hawkesbury, Ont., hometown and moonlighting as the coach of the local tier-two junior team.

Played well with Gaudreau at the WC too.

Probably has a lot of connections with the American core on this team. He's a centre but is right shot, could be a good RW for Mony and Johnny. Big contract though, Flames would have to add salary. I suppose the Sens could take Ryan as well and flip him for a pick at the deadline.

Thing about trading Bennett is that it makes a soft team even softer. We'd probably see a lot more of Rinaldo or Ritchie in the line up if we traded Bennett.

Devils would have to first acquire Quinn Hughes as well and throw him in to the deal to make it work.

Bennett for the Hughes brothers.

I would go that route. That sounds like a decent gamble to get even more out of the 1st line. I would even let Ottawa throw us a dead contract to make it happen. White and Ritchie in with Bennett and Ryan out? Seems like a win.

Maybe a 1st? It's tough to say; we're just scratching the surface with Benny

We can debate if it is a strike or not.
But hoping for the strike is an odd thing for a fan.

Why? I am sick of the gm, he's not building a contender, has had ample time to show his merit in the role.

I'd be pretty happy with that return I think, even though he's another left shot.

For the record:

Sam Bennett: PP time last night: 1:32
Eat Bread: 1:30
Dube: 1:10
Leivo: 0:16
Lucic: 2:44

So I can see everyone being upset Lucic gets more time than them, but Bennett had more time that Dube, Mangiapane or Leivo, who everyone keeps saying get his time.

He also had 15:30 TOI total vs 12:49 for Mangiapane, 13:04 for Dube & 11:40 for Leivo.

The idea that Bennett doesn't get opportunities to succeed is MAGA hat level deflection.
He played well yesterday and was rewarded with ice time and time on PP1.
It's really that simple, you play well, you will play.

Remember Bob’s “go to” favorite phrase....

“Always earned, Never given.”

Maybe Sam needs to earn it, all by himself...baby steps, 5 years in.
Maybe the coaches need to bring meritocracy back in the fold instead of the arbitrary way things are decided now.

Lindholm took a penalty so Bennett got an extra shift on the PP because Lindholm was in the box.

If anything, Bennett started to play well AFTER that shift. Almost like more touches lead to increased confidence.

You play more, you play better.

As far as value, I think the flames would do well to get a 2nd rounder back. Maybe throw in another asset in low pick or low tier prospect.

This is essentially the Lazar trade, with Bennett having a slightly higher value (floor being a 4th line guy, which was a higher floor than the unknown commodity Lazar was).

Well let’s play Leivo Lucic and Simon more too. Get them going as well.

what evidence is there that it is more arbitrary now than before?

If they can find a guy in a similar situation, that would be ideal (high pick, hasn't lived up to promise). Outside of that, I don't think we're getting more than a 3rd.
