We’re not dealing with an Alzner deal here - we’ve got a solid, if flawed, veteran defenseman on a mid-term contract and all it cost was money we had to spend anyway.
Look at the way this defense is built. Gio, Andersson, Hanifin, Kylington, Valimaki, that group NEEDS a Tanev. They don’t need another show pony.

I’m confused by your previous post.
I am in complete agreement with this post.

Essentially, yes. You can’t expect Tanev to come in and be Brodie, he’s not that guy.

I don't like the term or the AAV, but this is a player who provides a skillset that nobody else in our defensive core has, so I guess it fills an organizational need, and with any luck, will be an improvement on Hamonic. Now we just need Valimaki to step up and make up for the loss of Brodie.
Obviously, Pietrangelo was going to be too expensive or wasn't interested, and I suspect this means that Brodie wasn't interested in re-signing here once the offer came from Toronto, considering his desire to be closer to family.
I hope that Treliving still has something up his sleeve to dump some cap and sign Hall, but today's signings definitely make that less likely. As it stands, we have enough to re-sign our RFAs and fill the roster, but that's about it.

We had some cap space this offseason...better go spend $10.5M on Markstrom and Tanev in day 1.
Why not try to just get a value deal from a team trying to clear cap? NJ was able to get Murray for a great deal.
A third of the league is at the cap and it appears the Flames didn’t even try to take advantage of the cap space we had.
Ah well. Hopefully he can find his game again and reverse the trend of his last two years.

Ryan Murray is significantly worse than Tanev defensively and makes more money, plus it cost NJ a pick. That seems like a pretty awful idea considering you are complaining about the money spent.

Edler and Myers were the heavy minute men for the Canucks in the playoffs.

I guess you didn't watch the HNIC panel during the playoffs, they were constantly singing the praises of Tanev

Chris Tanev same term but half a million less? That is a #### deal in comparison.
Why wouldn’t he sign Brodie for that money?
|
Pretty sure Brodie was set to sign the same contract as Tanev but was insisting on a NMC that they couldn't give him because they have Giordano, Hamonic and Andersson to protect.
Tanev signed the deal and can be exposed.
That's my guess.

All I meant was, Hamonic and Tanev have similarly bad Corsi and Fenwick whatevers. They’re useful players, but their value won’t show up in these contexts.
They may be stupid costly for what they bring, like Jeep Wranglers, but if you want to climb a mountain, they’re good to have.

Murray isn't better offensively either, which is a pretty low bar

Agreed, analytics have not found a good way to judge the value of defensive defensemen.

As for progress. The team made no progress since Treliving came here. Playoff bubble and a first round fodder.
Today, he re-tooled the team in a substantial way. Make a change to the top line and this team is nothing like last season.
Maybe it will blow up in his face, but it's unfair to say that this team is stagnant.
|
Fair enough. Anyone you think would be a good fit on the top line?

I really hope they don't protect Gio. Love the guy, but no.

What ummm, just happened here, I don’t...what is...I mean...huh?
Chris Tanev? On these terms?!?
I don’t get it but I guess Treliving, uh, finds a way...To do strange, incomprehensible things.

Brodie is the better hockey player. Somehow, the Flames need someone like Tanev more.

Oh man I hope that’s not right. Losing Brodie at $4.5 per over wanting to protect Gio? That wouldn’t be very shrewd of the Flames IMO.

They could have exposed Gio and kept Brodie. Would have been a good chance Gio wasn't picked during expansion and even if he was would have free up some cap space.
