I'm saying that fine tuning this roster is what's going to happen. IMO, the players who have spots that will move to upgrade those spots are:

Frolik (#2 RW)
Brodie (LD) Doesnt need upgrading but opens a full time slot for much cheaper and younger options like Valimaki or Kylington.
Jankowski

Now Neal is a bit of a conundrum as I do not think they replace him for another 2 seasons. Fact is, that contract is a 3 year lock in. No way around it. I suspect he will have a better season next year. He's too good to go full Brouwer.

Who do we get to replace Janko and Frolik?

I still think Zucker is the guy coming in.
As for Janko, I'm thinking Alex Wennberg.

More speed. I think hes not a great fit in a Torts type system but is more built for the kind of game the Flames play.

So I have on the way out:
Frolik
Brodie
Jankowski
Prout
Stone
Fantenberg

In:
Zucker
Wennberg
Valimaki
Kylington

Now what to do about goaltending?

Does Smith get a year to year contract after his warrior like 5 games? Does Rittich fancy being a 1b?

Do they start clean and bring in two new goalies?

I have no idea how that's going to shake out.

Why does that have to be the case?

People said the same of Hamilton, that we’d be giving up the best player in any deal, can’t trade him. Well turns out you can trade him for an 80 point young core forward.

If we’re trading Gaudreau or Monahan we would be getting a young star player back. Think Ryan Johansen for Seth Jones. Neither team was unhappy with their player, but they made the move to change the makeup out their team.

I always baffles me when people assume trading our best player would be for picks prospects or we’d automatically lose the deal.

Treliving doesn’t automatically lose deals. We should know that by now.

The point would be to change the makeup of our team. Do we really need more point producing forwards? I would argue no. But we do need our skilled forwards to fight through checking, be gritty and determined in the playoffs.

If it’s determined by coaches and management that they feel Gaudreau or Monahan is lacking too much in grit/compete then trading one of them for a player who is skilled but has more compete/grit could be an upgrade on the makeup of our team.

Why are you assuming trading them downgrades the team?

People said the same of trading Hamilton. He was too good of a young player to trade according to some. Contract was too good, upside too high.

Do people still believe that? Or are we happy with Lindholm/Hanifin?

Why can’t Treliving improve the team by trading one of Monahan/Gaudreau? He has to consider it. I don’t know why you assume any dealing involving them is a loss, very bad assumption to make.

Going to be hard to win a deal sending out Gaudreau. He is not Hamilton and seems likely you’re going to lose either scoring, youth or contract value.

Not impossible obviously, and hope the GM considers all options. Including patience.

After watching other teams, I think we really need a good 1a, 1b centre who can drive the play and 1 Dman who can shoot puck, specially during PP time. I hope we can upgrade Neal to real 2nd line fast strong winger also can shoot in PP.
And yes, our D didn't adjust for playoff hockey. Never give attacking team a time in the middle and skate with puck. And Forwards are so important to depend too. But flames F were to soft and liaving D zone too early or give the attackin team a much time to make a good decition.

If Francis is correct and Chucky doesn’t want to sign long term because he wants to play in the US asap then you may as well look at selling high on him. He’s already looking past Calgary now so I don’t want him if he doesn’t want to stay here and won’t give it his all. Time to sell high on a couple of Americans if the return is right.

Ive been seeing some suggestions here on CP to trade for Seguin, but I cant see the Stars getting rid of him with the way he is playing now. Unless they get knocked out.

However if the Flames did want to explore the idea of it, it would be costly and also should be done before July 1. On that day, Seguin gets to submit a 15 team trade list, essentially a 16 team NTC, guaranteed Calgary wont be one of the teams he is open to being traded to.

So trade Brodie, Jankowski, Kylington or Hanifin, Mangi and Stone for a good centre with OK cap hit. Trade our 1st with some B prospect for 2nd line winger and sign puck shooting D on free agent. Sell Neal for half salary. Then we won't loose much of points but our line up will be much harder to play against.

I would sign Tkachuk for Gaudreau salary not more. Even it is only a couple of years. Then will sell him high.

Francis is not correct, he throws crap like this out there all the time and every time he is full of bs. He is the Larry Brooks of Calgary.

Francis did actually. Not that anyone should remotely listen to his ramblings. Click bait.

Lol, no. This team can easily replace Frolik, Jankowski, Brodie, Czarnik and Neal and not skip a beat.

It would be prudent trading Giordano this summer. Good teams make tough decisions and his value is at its peak. We need to not hold on too long like we did with Iginla. Maybe we can squeeze one more elite season out of him.

There’s a Gaudreau trade to be made that can bring immense value back including at least one top 6 player that would contribute more come playoff time, plus other assets. Move Tkachuk to top line LW.

Monahan provides nothing more than 30-35 regular season garbage goals. He’s beat up by the end of the regular season. We need a bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, angrier, more competitive #1 center if we ever want to go deep.

Take Gaudreau, Monahan and Giordano off the team and we still finish 20 pts above the Oilers, not drafting 1st overall.

No way I would trade Monahan. However, I believe Peters needs to split him and Gaudeau up. Our #1 need is a 1st line centre. Giordano and a pkg. might get you that.

There is no indication Peters will ever be on this 'split up Johnny and Monahan' page. If they are on the same team, they are together.

He mentions in in one of his most recent Sportsnet articles. States that Chucky probably wants a 5 year deal so he can eventually head closer to home
