Riley Nash would be a comparable signing for teams looking at Ryan. Both right shot centermen who put up ~15/40 last season. Nash is bigger and younger, but not as good at faceoffs
I like Nash, but I read somewhere that both he and the Bruins are eager to work out an extension. I expect once Tavares settles on his destination we will see Nash re-signed.

“Coach’s favourite” requires some added context. Peters depended a lot on Ryan and played him in the powerplay because his next best options were Lee Stempniak and Victor Rask. He is going to have a tonne more options at his disposal here in Calgary.
And Peters continued to utilize him because he actually provided what was asked of him, has a great work ethic, compete and performed and produced above those other options.
Unlike Brouwer “Coach’s favourite” who we continued to utilize all over the ice after his production and performance added nothing.

I assume Nash is looking for term while Ryan might settle for 2 years at his age. I don't see any signing this year being anything but a stopgap while we continue to play the market and/or wait for Phillips, Tuulola, Foo, Gawdin et al to become relevant.

Been watching Riley Nash a long time since he was at Cornell. He's an interesting player, but wouldn't be on my list to help the Flames - don't like his skating or lack of physicality. He brings plenty to the table, but for what this team needs, I don't see a fit.

Yeah, Nash is a nice player but he is going to CASH in after a very good season last year. I'd rather the Flames not be the team that helps him do that.

So, if Ryan ends up going to another team what are the odds the Flames get Nick Shore back?
The premise of signing a player like Ryan is to find some "under the radar" value. Seems counterintuitive to enter a bidding war. Shore might actually be the value play here.

This whole thing was the Scorpion’s idea long ago. He was the first guy on the bandwagon. Now he is warning us against Ryan. I love that. Maybe he’s right.
The Leafs can go eff themselves. That’s quite a level of ######baggery telling a guy not to take a multi year deal from another team yet because if Toronto misses out on their one true love they’d still like an opportunity with their sloppy seconds/runner-up.
