It's midnight Cinderella. 8 years is off the table and Tavares's time as an Islander has likely come to an end.

To not get anything for him seems extremely shortsighted

The Islanders blew it. They needed to clean out the front office and make some moves to convince JT to stay before the end of May. Too little, too late.

I’m sure Garth Snow doesn’t need to show up on Monday.

Another thought, maybe Tavares camp won't release anything until the signing period starts just in case the Islanders decide to accuse a team of tampering.

Just to keep everything by the books.

Weight either. Unless they want to mock Lou and Wang.

I put nothing past Lou. He’ll stretch out this as long as he can to piss off the TO media if nothing else. As as Sureloss said, if there’s sniffs if tampering Lou will definitely gather all that info and wait it out.

Are the interview period rules clearly defined in the CBA?

I found this in the cba but can’t find the no negotiating rules.

Quote:
Unrestricted Free Agents may meet and interview with potential new Clubs, but may not sign new SPCs until the opening of RFA/UFA Signing Period

Here’s an excerpt from Sportsnet.

Quote:
“Clubs are permitted to discuss their potential interest in, as well as the general parameters of, a potential future contractual relationship with another Club’s pending RFA or UFA during the applicable ‘interview periods,’ but Clubs may not enter into any agreements, or make any binding offers, promises, undertakings, representations, commitments, inducements, assurances of intent, or understandings of any kind, express or implied, oral or written, concerning the terms of a potential SPC with another Club’s pending RFA or UFA.”

Also, I don’t think a 8th year that was exclusive to the Isles would make or break that deal from either side. He’s going to be an even wealthier man no matter a 7 year deal or 8 year deal or maybe he just wants a 6 year deal, who knows...but if he wants to stay on Long Island for over the next half decade, he wants to stay on Long Island..his 2026-27 season plans don’t have to firmed up just yet.

Kinda cool actually, this feels like the first time in a long time one of the big time star UFA’s actually made it to free agency.

If Toronto signs Tavares could we trade for one of their young forwards?

For sure. I totally expected another Stamkos type situation where nothing happens

I think that ship sailed when they traded Hamilton. Can't see the Leafs wanting anything else we'd be willing to give up.

I'm thinking you are right.

Mirtle, who covers the Leafs, was acting like he knew where Tavares was going but then kind of backed down. I'm guessing his source told him not to go public likely thinking what you said.

I feel like the Leafs might actually get him now. I'm like 50/50 he comes here.

if TO signs JT, i don't think they'd be looking to take on salary - they be looking to move players for picks or younger prospects imo...

a kid like Valimaki, would be able to shake free someone like Nylander for example....but that's a lot to give up, esp with Fox out of the plans.... maybe a kid like Kapanen could had for a 2nd? but he's not someone that saves TO a lot of cap space in a year or two.

Makes sense to me. Tavares brings Stanley Cup back to southern Ontario and becomes the home town hero. Tavares and Matthews as the top 2 centres. It will only be a matter of when not if.

The longer this drags out the better the Flames have a chance at Ryan so that's hopefully good for the Flames I guess.
