There was every reason that score should have ended up how it was.
I feel at times advanced stats are more a tool for fans to better cope with losing.

The problem is taking something that has value in large sample sizes - i.e.: 5v5 Corsi as it relates to winning percentage - and trying to apply it to single games. Especially games so thoroughly dominated by special teams. You end up using a 38 minute sample size instead of 3800.

At best, that 5v5 scoring chance stat argues we should have lost 8-4 instead of 8-2.

@RealKyper: After what was described as lengthy internal league debate sounds like @NHL will suspend @DetroitRedWings Luke Witkowski 10 games for coming back on the ice. @NHLFlames Matthew Tkachuk will also face a discipline hearing with @NHL tomorrow for his involvement

Seriously? I've seen unpenalized slashes (probably in every game) that have be more vicious than that little tap that Tkachuk did.

Its not the slash, its the fact that he slashed a guy who was no longer on the ice as he was escorted off by officials

Pretty sure the discussion is more of when he did the act and what it caused than the actual viciousness of it. I agree, I don't think it's suspension worthy though.

I think he was tapping W to get his attention to snark at him some more. It's not his fault W came back to the ice. That's what caused the brawl.

Ten games for Wikowski is automatic. There's no way around it. I don't see Tkachuk will get more than a fine, but I'm kind of surprised there's no indication of Ferland getting anything.

Ferland should get something for throwing some punches?

How was it a lengthy debate? I thought it was pretty clear in the rules.

From the bench, yes. I'm not sure what the precedent is, but the league definitely frowns upon players on the bench engaging in altercations. It's not that much different from leaving the bench to get into an altercation.

NHL: So Matthew, did you actually spear anyone on Wednesday because we've watched the replay 100 times and still can't see anything remotely close to a spear.

MT: Nope.

NHL: Okay, thanks.

That's the way it should be.

Pretty funny the Wings coach saying that Witkowski "could have made it worse" implying somehow that what he did was mature or good.

What kind of an argument is that?

"uh yeah, I robbed a bank, but I COULD have robbed TWO banks, but since I didn't, you should respect me for it"

In whatever they look at with Tkachuk, does repeat offender status come into play?

He could have taken his skate off and tried to stab someone with it. So really, it's not that bad.

Considering Wetwillykowski's own teammate (Wilson?) was urging him with a hand to get back to the room when Tkachuk gave him the tap, and he still stormed back out onto the ice when the ref wasn't looking, I don't think Tkachuk would get anything more than a small fine. If anything at all.

I believe Scott Wilson was also the one trying to peel Mantha off a grounded Hamonic. We should send the man a fruit basket.

I can buy a fine on Tkachuk for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Oh man, people better prepare themselves for the suspension Tkachuk is about to get. No way he deserves it, but he is going to get one for sure. There is a clear bias in how Detroit, and certain other teams, are dealt with both in games, and in suspensions. Flames fall on the other end of the spectrum and get the short end of the stick repeatedly.

Be prepared.
