From the globe and mail article posted 20 minutes ago:
"Calgary offered to pay for one-third of the arena, in equal instalments over a number of years, according to a source. The money would have to be paid back. The ownership group, according to this proposal, would cover another third of the total cost and surcharge on tickets would pay for the remaining third, the source said.
The Flames organization rejected the offer, the source said."

Remarkably fair offer, of course they rejected it.

If the flames had to pay back the third... That means the city was offering nothing except financing no?
Seems like a very hard line

I would guess the 1/3 "to be paid back" would be through a CRL model.

I appreciate the point, and honestly would love if this was a zero dollar public venture, but REALISTICALLY that isn't possible.
And that doesn't mean throw them 10-20 million in infrastructure... it needs to be a shared solution.

It won't be completely privately funded. But the point is not just a point it's a fact. The Flames can't build a stadium wherever they want unless they want to pay for it outright. Otherwise they have to fit into the citys plans.
If you are jaded about Nenshi and view an entertainer district for the city as HIS project where he gets only what he wants and his way and it's going to be Nenshis playground or something than I'm not going to be able to convince you otherwise.
The city's view of East village with the arena seems like something the city would truly benefit from. Is it just because Nenshi is presenting that you are fighting against it? Because that's what it seems like.
Again, for better or worse, what the city council wants IS what the city wants. They are elected as representatives. Don't like yours? Vote for someone else next time.

I suspect that's for the cost of the arena itself. The land swap and other infrastructure would have to be picked up by the city. Those should be factored in since they are pretty important.

It sounds like up front the owners would pay 2/3 and then get paid back over a number of years? I'm not sure

The west village is an awesome idea that with some tweaking would bring a lot of people and money downtown as a complete entertainment district. Nenshi should have thought about it but he didn't and it's burning a hole in his butt.
I for one am tired of a lot of politicians in this city but municipal politics being what it is they are all coming back because nobody cares enough to change things and toss some of the dead weight out

More and more, I'm learning that I'm not an NHL fan, but just a fan in the sense of "community" that forms around the local team. Shared experiences through winning and losing... Yada yada yada.
And you know what? It seems the ownership would rather turn that community against itself... so I say take your team and run. I'll be better off. Maybe I'll stop wasting life in front of the TV (or occasionally in the 200s) and do something useful like study Viking history.
KK isn't the fool. I am...by falling for this scam.

Sounds like the other way around. The city would pay for 1/3 but in instalments, not upfront.

Pretty much anyone saying that Edmonton got a deal done so why can't we is saying this.
Because Edmonton got laughably taken to the cleaners out of desperation.

A third each paid by the city, the Flames and facility users seems fair. 2/3 paid by the Flames and 1/3 by us is extreme when you consider the climate and what other cities like Edmonton paid.
I think King, Bettman and Edwards are dbags but that is a little extreme by Nenshi.
Surely he didn't expect that to be accepted.

Not sure if they're trying to influence the election, influence Nenshi with the threat of the election, or both. But it's pretty disappointing that this rink will get disproportionate attention relative to all the other legitimate concerns the city needs to address.

And then the owners pay that back. So ultimately they pay 2/3 just some of it is deferred. I think.

They don't have to explicitly say it for it to be obvious. There are a bunch of posters who want the Flames to get whatever they want. What more do you think they want than to pay the absolute least amount of money possible?
