not sure if you remember or not but the season ended largely the same way it began. Mediocre/sucky.

It is honestly difficult to cheer for a team that makes the same mistakes year over year and experiences similar or the same results.

I'm sure you could take a wait and see approach every year, but I find that to be an empty void of fandom. There were no offseason additions that legitimately addressed the lack of scoring from a bottom half offensive team last year, and so far this year they can't score.

I could turn my brain off and say "I wonder if they will miraculously turn it around", but I don't find that very entertaining or fun at all as a fan.

If you want to be a Flames fan and cheer for a cup winner, you have to have a backup team.

The cap was supposed to help change that but we're 12 years going on 13 into the salary cap era and the team has one second round appearance to show for it. Even the oilers, who spent a decade out of the playoffs, have a similar story to tell. The Flames over that time span are one of the worst freakin' teams in the whole league!

The latest arena debacle (of monumental proportions) is just the cherry on top of a #### sundae Flames fans have been eating for 20 years.

The Flames aren't boring because of Gulutzan, they are boring because they are less talented than an average NHL hockey club. Talented teams are exciting to watch, and the Flames aren't that.

Doesn't surprise me at all that the organization looks like it is having some issues filling seats and having fans engaged in the product. You can only mismanage a business for so long before your customers go away, and the Flames have benefited, probably far too much, from a captive customer base.

I've been a Flames fan for 30 years and I'm looking forward to watching my backup team, Tampa, go far in the playoffs this year.

This team is boring as crap to watch. If I were a season ticket holder I would be pissed. This is a waste of time.

I thought this thread got bumped because Johnny finally scored again and not only was I wrong about that, I found out a long time posters’ “backup team” (whatever that is) is Tampa f’n Bay. Is there a puke emoji?

Serves me right for expecting a positive post to support I guess (shrugs shoulders).

On that note, nice to see Gaudreau shoot and score! Keep it up!

So does a person such as yourself choose a different “backup team” every year? If not, how long has Tampa been your “vomit inducing” team?

yeah, i usually pick a couple of different teams a year. Tampa is outrageous, like a lot of the players on their roster.

Washington is fun to watch this year, so is Chicago.

That’s interesting and I can understand how and why a person would do that, but I honestly can’t even pretend I could cheer for another team throughout the course of a year. I can be impressed with other teams and admire their abilities but I am unable to cheer for another team unless the Flames (or a wager I’ve made) have something to gain from it. Isn’t feasible for me but I don’t think any less of your dedication to the Flames because of it. Everyone is different.

I don't skip events to watch hockey games anymore.....
Rather do something somewhat enjoyable than watching our frustrating team making the same frustrating mistake over and over again
Broken record syndrome is tiresome and GG seems to have no clue how to control the players
Haha...

i don't go out and buy a jersey or anything, but I enjoy following specific players or coaches and watch how things progress over a season.

Anyway, thread not about me, just that not surprising other fans out there are feeling apathetic towards the franchise, they do nothing but shoot themselves in the foot and subsequently lose.

You'd have to be crazy to find that enjoyable. How I stay sane is by not letting the Flames dominate my hockey watching. I highly recommend it to those fans feeling burnt out on the Flames.

As someone who has loyally followed this team since the 05-06 season, I can say I’ve never been as disinterested in this team as I’ve been this season. We went through a ~4 year rebuild, and the end result is a mediocre team that might be good enough to sneak into the playoffs, but will end up being a first round exit just like every playoff year since 04 (excluding 2015).

I only get to go to one flames game every year when they come around to philly, and I used to count down the days until the game came around. This year, I’m not nearly as excited for the game as I’ve been in previous years.

I guess it’s just part of being a fan of a sports team, the team you root for will for a majority of seasons just end up leaving you disappointed at the end of the year. Is it really worth the time and money to continue to watch something that ends up disappointing you time and time again?

It didn't help that the team made the arena issue so public. It's like they wanted one of two outcomes. Get a new arena on a deal that absolutely robs the tax payers like Edmonton...or anger the fan base to a point where they stop showin up so you can move the team.

Right now it's like the team is fully committed to outcome 2. Play lousy and boring enough so fans lose interest and they can leave town.

Yup because there is no better business strategy I know than intentionally running your business into the ground. That is no doubt the plan.

I'm becoming a fairweather CP fan. Nothing against the site -- I'm here daily -- but the mentality around here is gross.

This season, all but a few games have been really entertaining. We don't have the record we have without a few stinkers but I'm really excited watching this team this year.

Then I come in here and see an overwhelming amount of negative and extremes. A slice of optimism will go a long way to pumping some energy into your Flames Fandom. This is a really fun team to watch, that legitimately could do a lot of damage when things start clicking.

Enjoy it.

Everything was taken into consideration until "back up team."

Wth? And you pick Tampa? What is wrong with you?
