No. Let's get us a silver cup, a President's Trophy and maybe a scoring title.

This team has been shallow asset wise for decades, and one of the reasons is they continually mis-time when to move on from players. When it is all said and done it may well end up being that they got nothing out of the last core of this team: Iginla, Kipper, Bouwmeester, Regehr. The only hope of ANY return from those 4 guys right now is Klimchuk and Poirier.
That's grim.

I wanted at least 7. Happy with 6. Wanted 7.
I don't see what's wrong with that.
That's tough though. While I don't disagree, 7 years from now JG might be costing us a lot more than he would have, or it may be evident a player we'd like to have will decide to go elsewhere and we'll be upset. But how we feel then will likely all come down to what happens in the next 6 years, and we may be just as likely to be wanting the Flames to move on from JG come the end if this deal.

Anything beyond 5 years out is just way too crystal ball, especially for sports and athletes. I'd hear yah if this had been a bridge deal, but they bought a year of UFA and locked one of the most promising players in the league up for 6 years on a seemingly great AAV. Pretty hard to call that poor asset management, given the deal is likely going to last longer than the teams next "cycle" or "window" and will likely outlast any of the management who signed the deal (unfortunately)

I didn't say it was poor asset management. My point is I hope they are more proactive with this core than they have been in the past.

Six years is a long time and it will be at least three years until the team will has to take inventory of how he's improved as well as how close they are to being a cup contender. They should have an idea then if he's a franchise player they want to keep or if they want to move a top asset at his peak value and take advantage of a quality trade that makes the team stronger. As long as it doesn't get to the last year of the deal I'm not too worried.

I was never too too worried, and avoided posting in that 'other' thread. Johnny seems like a guy that wants to play.. sitting out would have probably killed him lol!

Great news. Love the cap hit, and 6 years is long enough. Gives the Flames 5 good years of Johnny before they decide what to do. Gives the team a tonne of flexibility, and keeps the salary structure manageable.

This is really huge. Yeah, you didn't get too many UFA years, but there is a lot of talent coming up, and this allows the team to re-sign them for manageable cap hits, which then allows the team to actually be in a position to build a winner. I am also sure that 29 other GMs and ownership groups are breathing a sigh of relief.

Going to be fun watching Johnny for the next 6 years, and it is going to be fun watching this team play meaningful hockey (playoffs!) for most of those years I would bet. Salary structure... thank goodness this contract is under 7. Really a huge deal for Calgary's future, and a really huge deal to have Johnny here for 6 years. I was starting to think that a bridge contract was going to happen, leaving the Flames with a tougher time in planning for the future and trying to build a winner. Perfect!

Your post made sense to me. He's a guy that you can't let get to free agency. Either sign him a year early like Giordano or trade him a year or two ahead of free agency. A first round pick and AHL scrubs won't be acceptable. Either way this is stuff we won't have to visit for a long while.

Great outcome. Fits in the budget and the term is more than good enough. The team will have the flexibility it needs to sign Bennett, Brodie, Tkachuk and company moving forward. This is a great deal.

I think if this contract had been signed in July, we all would have been over the moon, but because it dragged on and the Flames are only getting 1 year of UFA, my mind immediately went to bad feelings.

At the end of the day, this is a good deal, the Flames need to be good while Bennett is on his second contract (which probably won't be over 5) and while Tkachuk is on his entry level so this shouldn't matter anyway.

GREAT AAV.

Yup, did the same test on my wife. She's like..."what??? So he's leaving???" Because the rest of the note sounds kinda like a goodbye as well.

I just think it is goofy that the most important thing you take away from this signing is the need to trade Gaudreau when he is 28 years old. I mean, I get your thought process, and I am really only calling you out because your post was the first along these lines. But at some point, we all forgot the point of being a sports fan. Now it's all spreadsheets and the players have stopped being people and became assets. And as a result, you are already mentally dismantling a team that is only in the early stages of its rebuild.

Others have mentioned, but for me from a risk management perspective this is choice. Johnny has given us 2 amazing seasons, more than anyone could of hoped for. There is still a lot to prove, and the risk to do that is on him. Can he keep this up for 6 more years? Will his size lead to injury down the road? Will he magically lose it after coming out so strong?

Flames hold he cards here, and as others said you can trade him if you can't re-up him. The cap hit isn't a dollar more than it should be. Gives them room for the other players who will need to be paid soon.

Put it this way, JG and SM are together signed for near the same money McJebus is going to get. That is sad in one way, but great for us. We can build a good team with choices this deal has afforded us. If in 6 years we're still stuck in neutral that says a lot more about the people running the team than JG.
