Sorry, this is probably already in this thread, but is it true this is considered a weak draft year?

Whom decides that and with what, wouldn't all the players be compared against each other so its hard to tell if they are more talented then previous years?

Depth wise it's probably pretty weak. But the 1st round and a small chunk of the 2nd are loaded with little gems.

The players themselves decide how weak the draft year is with their play in the future. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Also, I would not be shocked in the least if Julien Gauthier ranks really really high on the Flames list as well. He also embodies a lot of what the Flames want. PWF, pure goal scorer, big, natural RW..... would not surprise me in the least.

It may not be a stretch that the Flames 2nd tier is Dubois, Tkachuck and Nylander. I know most are writing Nylander off but it's not a stretch.

I'd love to pick Nylander and use a combination of picks (assuming we get Stars 1st) to move up and pick Jake Bean. Don't think 28 and 35 gets it done but maybe add the Florida pick (~55) too

Would you guys box up every pick we have to move to #2? If you held #2 would you make that trade and recoup upwards of 10 draft picks?

No way WPG trades the #2 pick.

Quality>Quantity

It's a difficult thing to quantify. A lot of times watching peers play against peers you can see how certain players move and think and react and and how they would hold up against better, or even the best, competition. Evidently this year, a lot of the players don't have that.

What is it that gets us Dallas' 1st round pick? Winning this round or the next?

There is no consensus outside of the top 5 or 6 players, which is why we so often see teams trade up or down as the draft progresses beyond that pick range, but rarely see teams move within it.

Comparing trading down from #14 with trading down from #6 is not a good comparable at all.

Stars need to make the confrence finals. So beat the blues. Added stipulation is Russell needs to play over 50% of the total games it takes to get to the confrence finals. Thats a non issue though. I think that has been met. Or it's real close.

EDIT: Russell missed 1 or two games in the first round because of health. Since he has been healthy, he's been locked into top 4 minutes and has looked really good. The games played part of the trade isn't an issue IMO.

This round with the caveat Russell must play atleast half the games.

The pick rank is irrelevant.

Are you trying to tell me that we would see just as much variability in who each team has in their top 5, as who each team has in their 15-19?

Chiarelli is likely smart enough to know he can trade down from #4, get an additional pick/asset, and still draft a decent Dman.

I wouldn't count on that. He traded TWO first round picks for an AHL defenseman at the last draft.

Yes. Absolutely. After the top 3, I think you could slap the other 7 teams list who are in the top 10 together and you'll get players from all over the map with very little concensus. it's that kind of draft.

The Flames need more skill in their top-6. Nylander fits that need the best.

Logan Brown makes me think of Chris Dingman and Tyson Jost makes me think of Kris Chucko. So stay away!

I don't know if this was mentioned yet but do you think any of the "Second tier" players will have an immediate impact in the NHL?

After being pretty upset yesterday, I have come to terms with picking 6th. This Flames management and scouts have proved themselves over last 3-4 years and I fully expect them to pick the best player available at 6 or trade it for some necessary assets. Also, we have our main core already and getting a player like Matthews would have made it difficult to afford everyone under the salary cap. I think we will get a high-end complimentary player at 6 (Nylander, Jost, Tkachuck, or Dubois) and it will give us a great 1-2 punch with our top 2 lines. I hope we can sign a player like Backes, Okposo, or Lucic this free agency to really solidify a top 6.
