The play by Crawford attacking Fabbri and the way Shaw carried himself tonight make me glad that St. Louis is taking it to them.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I disagree with your assessment of Backes. He tends to dominate a lot of players with his size, yet isn't very tough in the fighting department ... and rarely does, hence I can see how you'd see him as a coward.

As for a punk, he isn't some little trash talking d### and he doesn't use his stick on guys ... he doesn't generally run guys and I'd say he plays a heavy, clean game.

The only d-bag stuff I can recall was prior to the Olympics when he fought a few Canadian players in leading up NHL games. One example was his fighting Toews. I'm combining this incident with your inaccurate portrayal of the Blues and theorize you like the Hawks. I know you're obviously a Flames fan, and I usually agree with your comments and find many of them hilarious, but here I feel your post was simply wrong. St. Louis doesn't have a bunch of punks and that's why I'm cheering for them in the playoffs this year.

Edit: Having watched your compilation page, I stand by my opinion. Two of the four incidents sited were simply a matter his being bigger than his opponent (McGinn and international one). The cross check on Holmstrom seemed pretty weak, you'd see that happen at least a dozen times any game. As for Stajan, I agree that was bad, but I'm sure you recognize Backes isn't known for such maneuvers. I somewhat equate him to Regher. Was he a punk?

I understand the hate for the Hawks, but plenty of punks on the Blues too.
The Blackhawks have 152 shots and the Blues have 105 shots after four games.

I don't care who wins this particular series, although I do find the Hawks more exciting to watch as an outsider.

The officiating in this game was pretty typical of NHL hockey. No way the blues should have got the extra penalty on that play by Crawford, but as per the norm for NHL officials, once they realized it was probably the wrong assortment of players in the box and the Hawks score on the PP, the Blues get every remaining call for the remainder of the game. I just personally don't like how if the refs screw things up and its clear a team gained a massive advantage from their screw up, they feel like they some how have to atone for that mistake and hold it against the team who benefited. I understand their is a human element to officiating, but we see it far to often.

I loved that game, found it highly entertaining. Guys swear at the refs all the time, just cause the double middle finger was caught on camera, big deal. not ten seconds later shattenkirk was being blatantly dismissive and rude to the ref too. The refs can call it if they feel its warranted. I loved the scrums and the emotion, as fans i think we need to stop dissecting the gamemanship so much. This stuff has happened for years, now there are just hd replays of every single player at all times and the media blows it up. Had nobody caught the Kadri throat cut gesture to gio on camera and replayed it 15 times, do you think articles and interviews would have followed such an irrelevant part of the game?

Glad to see St.Louis possibly get by Chicago.

nothing against the Blackhawks, but honestly, i just want to see someone new win the Cup. I don't want to see Chicago win it again. I don't want to see LA win it again.

just get it done Blues!!!

Someone asked if I am proud of our guys? Yes, yes I am...every team has an agitator (except, perhaps, your guys), Shaw knocked down Boumeester, I think, while driving late to the net, happens all the time...Forwards and D jousting as the forwards drive the net...the Blues D-man, whoever it was, surely went down easily.

As far as the Ladd interference...I think, because it was in the middle of the ice, it seemed worse than it was...but, I think, also, if you roll back your DVRs, and watch the Blues "finish their checks", about the same amount of time between the guy getting rid of the puck, and getting hit, has been similar to that Ladd play.

As far as Crawford going Billy Smith on Fabbri...Fabbri, had nowhere to go, and hit Crawford high...but, I certainly, also, didn't see any extraordinary effort to "avoid the contact"...the extra Blues call, apparently was somebody spearing Ladd in a scrum.

The Blues have been somewhat lucky, that the 'Hawks are simply not a physical team, up and down the lineup...A couple of times, I thought that the 'Hawks could lay a clean hit on Tarasenko, as he pulled up on the half-boards, I think TVR passed up an opportunity to smoke him, just before one of the PPs that led to a goal, but, only Ladd and Seabrook really seem to hit.

Elliot was both good and lucky (the puck that got behind him and flipped up, instead of rolling in, for instance). And this series looks liable to be "stolen" by him.

But, my guys have been down in series before, and have proven to be a "tough out"...

On to game 5...

It was Bouwmeester. To be fair to him, he went down easily because he has the toughness of a q-tip.

I think Shaw probably should have been given a misconduct for flipping off the refs, and that would have probably prevented the shenanigans at the end of the game. He should probably get some kind of suspension at this point.

The fact that "you can play" is partnered with the NHL means this should be an automatic suspension for Shaw. Forget the middle fingers, you get caught yelling f****** on a camera in a league that's publicly working so hard to make itself welcoming to the LGBT community and awaiting the first player to come out?

I'm glad the 'you can play' team is aware and will be pressuring the league to do something. Personally I'd love to see the NHL come out and announce "Andrew Shaw has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing". I doubt they'll have the balls and will just hope it goes away.

I dunno, if Bettman and the league let this go, there will be an almighty s***storm.

^suspended indefinitely pending a hearing seems a little harsh for yelling ###### on TV though IMO. It's an emotional game, I am sure that Shaw is not actually against any of that and didn't mean anything by his comment. Just my Opinion

It is harsh, and not at all what they would do. I was just stating that it's what I'd like to see.

I believe he will get suspended and should, not because he said it but because he got caught on camera saying it. I fully believe that if every player who used that word got suspended you'd have teams in trouble to ice a full lineup.

If the league were actually serious about getting rid of this kind of talk they would treat it like diving with public fines and/or suspensions when officials hear it being said. All the league cares about is optics, plain and simple. Their PSAs and partnership with You Can Play is a big part of that and while I'm sure some do, the majority of ownership, league officials, staff, and players do not give a flying ****.

That is why Shaw will get suspended, he has to or the league will look like colossal hypocrites. Bettman will pat himself in the back, talk about how progressive the league is, and things will go on as they were.

End of misanthropic rant for the night!

There are a million and one things he could have yelled that are way more acceptable. Literally any swear with an added er on the end and nobody bats an eye. But he didn't, he said what he said. Therefore he should have the book thrown at him. Then maybe next time he or anyone else thinks of uttering that word, they will think again and shout something else. You want to eliminate a problem, you clamp down on it, hard.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance
NHL has alerted the Blackhawks that they're investigating Shaw comments. Wouldn't expect comment from NHL until that is complete.

Saying something like "F off that is a BS call, what the F are you watching" is different than flipping off the ref. Fans can't usually hear what the players are saying, but everyone can see them flipping off the ref.

I honestly don't think I've seen a ref get flipped off before.

God, I hate the Blues and the Hawks are some how managing to make me hate them more. I think they need to go play golf early for a few years. Bad look up and down the roster.
