Annnnd Ken Rosenthal comes to crush the dreams of re-signing Price...

Quote:
The essential dynamics, though, remain unchanged -- the teams with the most interest in Price, in no particular order, are the Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants and Red Sox, according to major-league sources.

While Price enjoyed his time with the Blue Jays and is open to returning to Toronto, the Jays are not expected to be a major factor in his free agency, sources say.

Yep, this is more in line with what I was expecting. And no.....Grienke won't be coming here. Imo, our only chance at an ace was Price. So this effectively ends the idea that we will get a big name.

Oh well, hopefully we can at least pick up a solid number 3.

I always find things like this funny:

Quote:
It probably is more complicated than that -- major leaguers love playing in St. Louis, which is about a five-hour drive from Price's home in Nashville, Tenn.
I'm pretty sure Price is flying anyways, not driving 5 hrs to get to his home!

I really hope Price goes on record as saying they didn't even try to sign him despite him being willing to consider resigning. Maybe then the ownership issues and deception to their own fans through the media will really come to a head.

David Price has told associates he will NOT sign with Red Sox!
He may use them for leverage but #Jays are first choice

People that are surprised that Price likes Toronto may not realize support team gets + ownership group has huge $. Deal is far from done.

**BREAKING MLB NEWS**
David Price has told close associates he's planning on staying in #Toronto
Jays & Price still hammering out details
I think Price will remain a Blue Jay. From all the chatter and having his teammates such as Donaldson talk about how they want him to stay long term and how Price liked it in TO etc. They just have to agree on terms and Blue Jays ownership is rich as s**t, so they'll make it work.

That guy is terrible when it comes to hockey inside knowledge, is he better with baseball?

He's been right on a few things.

Peyton Manning to the Broncos
Leddy to the Islanders
Cespedes trade to the Mets
Nelson Cruz to the Mariners

I guess we will have to see if he is right with Toronto and David Price...

If the Jays have no intention of signing Price like some experts have said, they and Rogers can't be very happy about all these tweets suggesting they will. If they don't sign Price (or an equivalent) now, there's going to be a hornets nest.

Huge PR disaster if they don't sign someone of that calibre now.

If Rogers do actually pony up and put a legitimate offer on the table and Price signs in Boston, he may need personal security the next time the Red Sox play in Toronto.

The team's rotation is not good enough without adding Price or someone close to as good as him IMO. We will be sellers at the deadline if the rotation isn't improved in the off season. There simply aren't enough good prospects left to address that kind of a hole again via trade. They just addressed this need and now they look poised to let him walk away over money. What a frustrating waste.

Hopefully if the Jays truly aren't interested because they are cheap, Price comes out and says that he wanted to be back but the Jays weren't interested. The team will deserve the bad PR that would come with that, along with the destruction of all the goodwill generated from last season's run.

That's the silver lining if the Jays do cheap out on Price. The guy is very active on social media, and the truth should eventually come out (whatever that may be).

I want so badly to sign Price and get super excited about next season, but if we do lose the sweepstakes I'd love to see sportsnet get caught towing the company line again.

"Hello and welcome to sportsnet connected, after a hard fought battle and intense negotiations the Jays lost out on David Price who will reportedly sign with another team in the next few days. Sources tell us that despite the lofty offers put up by Blue Jays, David simply chose to be closer to home".

"I had a really great time in Toronto, loved the city, the fans, and wanted to continue to play there but ultimately there was no offer extended so I turned my attention to a small list of teams and will make a decision this week".

Personally I'd much prefer Greinke over Price, but Price is more signable, and Greinke will be more expensive for longer. If they don't sign either, there's nothing much on the market which forces them to trade a big piece for a starter and a reliever. From that perspective, I hope they sign Price at under $26M/season (no more than 6 years, top heavy), then deal Jose or Edwin for another legit starter and reliever. It's very possible to win with that type of team.

I'm guessing Price wants to actually stay if all offers are equal, but obviously that will not be the case. Money is likely to be close on a per year basis, so it'll come down to who wants to give the longest deal. That's where I think the Blue Jays ultimately will not get him, they'll offer 5 or maybe 6 years while others will go 7+.

There is no chance someone goes over 7 years on Price. That's uncharted territory, especially for a guy that is over 30. Hernandez/Verlander/Kershaw only got 7 years in their prime.

In my mind, the optimal contract on Price is 4 or 5 years. That's not going to get it done though. Need a 6th and potentially a 7th year. I'd be willing to sacrifice the albatross at the end (6th and maybe a 7th year) for 4-5 good years of Price. Anything over 7 is borderline insane though. I wouldn't be mad at the Jays at all if he signed somewhere else for 8 years. I would encourage them to walk away and look elsewhere.

Sportsnet media people are starting to run with the notion that the Jays won't be in the deep end of the pool on free agent pitching spending. Looks like expectation lowering and damage control is underway.
