I have to kind of laugh. This year's draft lottery and the Oilers winning it has a whole different vibe to it. I think the Oilers fans have recognized that it takes a lot more than just picking 1st overall to get a rebuild over with... and now most of them are just hoping McDavid can turn the franchise around.

The flames used to be criticized by saying that without top draft picks we are never going anywhere. Well we have proven that with good drafting you can and you don't need 1st overall picks in order to make the playoffs.

So lame. Oiler fans are already planning the parade route for the dynasty that is about to come supposedly. Funny the amount of texts and fb messages I got today after the lottery. Most of these people have said nothing about the oilers in months and all of a sudden they come out and want to talk oilers. I still have faith that management group will screw this up. Still a ton of holes on that team and even if McDavid is as good as they think it won't change the fact they are a terribly built team.

And whos bright idea was it to have the lottery today? Didn't they usually have it before the playoffs started in the past? No way we should be talking about the oilers or any other team not currently playing. What a distraction to the playoffs. They don't deserve this attention when there are 16 teams battling there asses off. Stupid by the league.

Oilers will only have his services for the duration of his entry level deal so the clock will start ticking in October.

Not sure if posted already, but this gem from down goes brown yesterday. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/th...ower-rankings/

The “Under Absolutely No Circumstances” Power Rankings

No. Just no.

5. Edmonton Oilers — They’re a tire fire, a train wreck, a running joke, a black hole from which no hope or happiness can ever escape. You might as well load McDavid into a nuclear submarine and fire him into the Mariana Trench.

4. Edmonton Oilers — Also, they already had the first overall pick three seasons in a row just a few years ago. Literally nobody wants this to happen.

3. Edmonton Oilers — Connor McDavid seems like a perfectly nice kid. Why would you do this to him? Why?

2. Kansas City Scouts — Wait, are they still in the league? No? OK, then in that case …

1. Edmonton Oilers — Look, I’m all for fairness and integrity, but if the Oilers win the lottery, then the league absolutely has to scrap the results and run it again. Don’t even delete the footage or try to cover it up — just have Bill Daly walk into the frame screaming, “Take two!” while angrily stuffing Ping-Pong balls back into the machine. Every hockey fan will understand.

Which means absolutely nothing, because as I said, that has been close to a complete team for many years... and the Oilers are nowhere near that.

The chances of the Oilers winning a cup just because they can add McDavid are still very, very slim. They are a brutal shallow team from top to bottom.

Let's say McDavid is the next Crosby.

How good is Pittsburgh if you took away Malkin and added RNH? Remove Letang and add Schultz? Remove Paul Martin and add Andrew Ference? Remove Fleury and add Scrivens?

Sorry, but while they may have improved, they're still not a playoff team

I know it's tough. I've been miserable all day ever since the draft lottery. But we have to focus as fans... Our boys our in the playoffs and ready to do some damage!! The dome is going to be rocking in late April while the oilers get the equivalent of a welfare check from the league. And the day that the flames have to face McDavid... He'll get a healthy serving of bouma, ferland, and Bennett every shift.

Sure... next year or the year after, the NHL will probably have those ####ers win another "lottery"...

doesn't matter what the coilers due; the NHL wants them to win... The FIX is in... swallow hard and accept it...or just boycott those games.

they will be bad next year, its just the fact that their incompetence is being rewarded again and we have to deal with another summer of fans/media pumping up how smart they are

We have to look at the positives:

1. Lowe and MacT are still running the show
2. Tavares, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, and Yakupov have a combined 0 Stanley Cups, because this isn't basketball, one player does not suddenly make a team a contender.
3. They're drafting someone who won't admit it, but he doesn't want to play there.
4. We should be thrilled that the Flames were not a part of the lottery. Any Oiler fan who mocks us for making the playoffs and missing out on McDavid is an absolute idiot.
5. They're going to have to pay McDavid over 10 million dollars/year to stay in Edmonton, meaning that they'll have to trade one of their big names already, and they won't have enough money to sign Nurse or Klefbom since they're already against the cap. Not to mention Draisaitl and Yakupov will need new deals soon too. That team is still a mess and far from out of it.
6. They missed out on the generational defenseman in Hanifin that they needed. Their defense is still putrid and isn't too promising.
7. Even if the Oilers manage to become somewhat relevant again, at least we'll see a good battle of Alberta.
8. Calgary still looks to be the better team. We have the intangibles that Edmonton lacks and a good culture.

McDavid is a huge win for the Oilers, but they're the Oilers, a huge win does not make them good. It makes them better, but they're still far from a good hockey team.

YUP.

eventually, given enough number one picks, they will start winning...

as ####ty as that organization is, if you keep winning "the Lottery" eventually, some day, based on "probability", you will win...

if the NHL keeps lobbing up soft curveballs, even an organization as inept as Edmonton will start winning...

Damn, people are sure taking this badly. it is ridiculous..not going to lie. but they did have a strong percentage to win it, fluke or not.

if there was any competence in the way the draft system was constructed this would be arizona's pick. and even if you were going to rig it, arizona would also be the best choice for the health and parity of the league.

this really is disgusting on so many levels. but one player isn't going to erase the mess that team has created. losing culture affects even great, gifted players. that said..poor Connor. honestly... the expectations that will be put on him, and the scrutiny he will have to endure when the he can't carry that out of mediocrity on his own. it just sucks. it sucks for the game....

there was a nearly 90% chance of them not winning it...and they have now won it multiple times with various odds. The odds of them getting 4 of 6 first overalls is....I can't even

hey, if people want to swallow hard and choke down McDavid to the Oilers, good on you...

I personally will not cheer for one iota of success for McDavid or any Oiler, just as I don't cheer for anyone on the Canucks...

do you believe the majority of Oiler fans are happy seeing Calgary in the playoffs? Really?
