Back to the magic wand...wasn't a new arena in the works anyway? After the damage is assessed, do you think that a multi-million dollar band-aid will be applied, only to be replaced by a new building soon? If they decide to fix the damage, it will be a major renovation and the team will stay in the facility long-term.

It will absolutely take a long time to rebuild either way the work commences, but when you only have a few months to complete the job, are you really going to wait for the water to recede, bring in an engineer to inspect and recommission the working pieces, have a drafter design a layout, send that layout to be tendered by several estimators and choose a contractor to begin the work? Or you could do what the south calgary hospital did (cost plus) where you pay the employees wages plus a certain % to the contractor and have work begin relatively quickly. I too am an electrician with 10+ years of commercial experience in the field, estimating and I have been lead hand on some of the larger jobs in Calgary's recent history. You're absolutely right though, you can't just throw cash at it to fix the problem immediately, but the most efficient way to get the job done would be cost plus.

To get on the technical side of things, I would hope the wire inside would be RW90 due to the nature of the building as that is suitable for use in wet locations. To say every wire and piece of equipment needs replacing is like saying for someone who has a detached garage to replace the underground feeders every time it rains. The PVC isn't waterproof either and you'll always have water and ice inside of those pipes. Sure, lots will have to be fixed but its probably not a "scorched earth" as far as the electrical goes.

That's fine if you have one project going that route. But this sort of electrical work will need to be done on hundreds of buildings, including many of the big oil companies downtown. There is going to be a severe shortage of skilled labour to do the work, and lots of different companies throwing money at the problem. Costs will be high. Not everyone will secure the resources they need, regardless of how much they spend.

You're bang on in saying that cliff, the scope of work is huge. That's why earlier in this thread I said it seems highly unlikely to have the saddledome ready for puck drop. All I was trying to say is that cost plus would be the quickest way to begin repairs

Well in steel, a cost plus contract usually delivers a better project. Often having a contractor and subcontractor on board early allows a lot of problems to be addressed before the design process is finished. Whereas in the bid and low price contracts, everyone cuts corners and is out for themself, and the job is always delayed.

Nice use of "sparky" jargon..you obviously know something about the trade. It's the emt , any t-90, or a/c 90 conductors, switch-gear, CDP, fixtures, outlets, fire-alarm panel, all securex cables for the fire alarm, all signalling and supervisory devices....
and like the last poster added, try getting the man-power. Maybe we can get more Dalton Mcguinty refugees from Ontario to come out and help

The man power will be the biggest issue absolutely. Looks like the capital of Newfoundland will change from Fort Mac to Calgary :P. There's so many variables to consider when it comes to the devices and switch gear that speculation would be difficult. What enclosure designations are they? Was the construction done to be in line with category 1 locations? I haven't seen the MDP or any subsequent panel rooms. Who knows, maybe Enmax cut power to the dome before any serious arcing occurred and the main gear can be salvaged.

What we need now is our version of Drew Brees to step up and commit to the team, help the rebuild, and lead us to the cup. Then 3 years after that Hartley will be suspended for a season.
Sounds good to me.

Knowing what we do about this city, in spite of this huge mess they will be ready for the 2013-14 season and it will amaze us all how they are able to rebuild the destruction of the Dome.

A picture from inside the Medicine Hat Arena (as most of you guys know, it is situated just above the South Saskatchewan River).

Who knew placing a bounty on Oilers would lead to so many problems?

Workers began pumping water out of the Saddledome this morning. First step of a very, very long process. Obviously.

Just wanted to apologize for some of my comments last night. I understand that the stampede and the dome are important parts of Calgary but was just frustrated with how much media attention they were getting and with how they seemed to be prioritized in front of Calgarians. I love the dome as much as anyone and look forward to watching games there next season.

Well, in fairness, I suspect that shot of the flooded Stampede Grounds will be one of the iconic images of this event. The shot of main street High River and the washed out TCH at Canmore are the other two that I think will stick. But the latter two broke in previous days, while the Dome and Stampede Park images just came out yesterday. And they will be momentarily forgotten tomorrow in favour of images of Medicine Hat.

A friend of mine is in the process of hiring a bunch of help for the Saddledome cleanup. If you're interested in helping with the cleanup, and getting paid for it, here is the info from her Facebook post:
