How does sleeping with Mae harm one's reputation?

Fotze's mom jokes are obvious jokes.
But posters claiming that Burke father a child on another woman is something entirely different.
And I'm not sure if you're aware, but people talk about stuff they read on the internet, just like they talk about stuff they hear on tv or the radio or from other people.

Burke is bringing a lot more attention to this rumour with this silly law suit. I never heard about it until now. Doesn't seem like a smart idea and only somebody with the attitude of a Burke would do it.
This is the main reason I would be against him joining the Flames. It would be too much about him and not the team.

The damage to Burke's personal life has already been done, this law suit will not add to it.
Burke is doing the right thing for himself and for others that have internet rumours disrupt their lives. I doubt he is in it for attention or money. What he is doing is showing future internet posters that they might want to think twice before putting bullcrap rumours that could affect personal lives on the internet. That's fine by me.

Good on Burke for taking the time to do this.
It is easy to just accept that it is internet posters and there is nothing you can do, but that not only perpetuates the problem, it continues to cultivate it.
At some point, someone has to make a stand, so thanks Mr Burke.

Burke's lawyer was just on XM NHL radio.
-definitely going to be looking for damages. Want the penalties to be a deterrent to others.
-wants the law to catch up to social media
-damages will go to charity
-believe they will have identities soon. Some identities already known
-Burke is doing this on principle and is willing to see this through
-likely using the law to compel websites to give info on identities

I had to Google Hazel Mae.
She should be the one suing people over this.
I don't think my wife would even be mad at me.

Hazel Mae's lawyer just sent out a statement: she supports Brian Burke's lawsuit against Internet trolls, and is keeping legal options open.

Is this the first legal case of this kind, I wonder? I have not heard of similar cases, where anonymous forum users have been named in a lawsuit. Someone in US have sued for violations of game rules in some silly Internet-based "game of life" (the name escapes me at this moment), although I didn't hear how it had evolved thereafter. But this is so different on so many levels!

I would think Burke is simply fighting out of principle and will be forced to quit when his bills rack up. No doubt these rumors affect his family and whatnot, and it's a matter of suing to show that he doesn't stand for rumors of that nature. Say he sue's and wins and sites like CP give up the IP address of poster x - then what? ISP won't give up individuals names. Even if they somehow do, how does he prove that out of 8 people living in a household, person x posted that?

Not sure if its been mentioned it Phil Mikkelson not so long ago won a Quebec case forcing Videotron to unmask an online heckler who had said he fathered an illegitimate child.

I think there is a real problem with privacy this day in age. Not just with social media, but the plain interest in other people and what they do. So many people want scoops on other peoples lives that it has become a ridiculous competition and I for one hope that this is a step towards fighting for more privacy. Obviously, it is just a court battle to tell people not defamate on someone but the the subject matter is still private.

Remember kids, it's not okay to spread rumours about people. However, it is okay to use your team of lawyers to threaten financial destruction to people who spread rumours. That's awesome!
