Same here. 2 years of frustration and finally convinced them after 3 service calls to replace the gateway. Boom, everything is fixed.

Be firm with them and say you are leaving if your box is not swapped. They may even get someone to install a signal booster to your house like they did with me.

My Gateway was faulty, but they came and rewired my house before fixing the obvious, so cut to the chase and get that box swapped.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to say to the CSR when asking about getting Gateway? We just had a Tech in here looking at one of our boxes that died and he told us that they would switch out 2 of our HD boxes for Gateway portals. When we called Shaw to talk to them about switching to Gateway, the CSR told us no, that they wouldn't switch out anything, we'd have to pay the full ding. I've never had to barter for Shaw services before so I'm not sure the best way to go forward. Any suggestions from those of you who have gone through this already?

Do they not still offer the trade in of some boxes towards a free gateway? Maybe they misunderstood and thought you were going to keep the old boxes and wanted free portals as well?

When I wanted to upgrade my box was too old so they said no, so I asked them to put me through to the cancellations department. Once I got through to them I ended up getting a deal on it.

Edit: I see the price for a gateway and 2 portals is now $498, I would see if they could give you a bit of a discount on that.

Yah we told them that the Tech said we could trade in 2 of our HD boxes (the other 2 are too old), but the chick we were talking to still just kept saying no.

What kind of things did you say to get them to deal with you? We know we'd have to still buy the main system and box, all we are looking for is the trade in for the 2 HD boxes and maybe a deal on 2 more portals.

My box was one of the old motorola ones, and it wouldn't play MPEG4 channels so when I called to ask if they would take it as a trade in they said no it was too old. I asked them if they would give me any sort of deal on the gateway and the CSR said they couldn't, so I asked them if they were sure because I was paying for HD channels the box couldn't access and they were positive I couldn't get a deal but that I can use the easy pay of 36 months at $20 (they tried to hype it up like I was getting a deal on the hardware).

So I said I would like to start the process of cancelling my service with them and the CSR put me through to the cancellations department and the guy asked me why I wanted to cancel. I told him I didn't have an issue with my service, but that I was disappoined Shaw wouldn't give me a discount on new hardware. He said if cost was the problem that I could do that easy pay, so I told him cost wasn't the issue and that I though it was unfair that the current hardware I had worked fine, but I couldn't access a new format of HD channels so I was paying for a service and wasn't getting it. So then he went back to the whole easy pay thing and said how about if I give you a year free of easy pay so it would only be 24 months at $20, I said that would be fine and sign me up.

I canceled my Shaw service (signed up through Telus and they initiated the one month notice). Shaw phoned a couple days later wondering why I canceled. Said Telus was giving me a free TV and 3 HD boxes (they are free rentals, but I didn't say that). She said they couldn't do anything about a free TV but they would give me a free Gateway box.

Looking to switch over from our old PVR sometime in the next month. Can I do it myself, or do I need a tech to come in?

I don't think a tech strictly needs to come in, but I wouldn't want to do it myself, and I am a fairly technical guy.

So many things can go wrong, like signal levels being out of wack, that you are going to save yourself a ton of headache just getting a tech in.

They don't charge for having a tech come in and do the set up, and it's actually a lot more complicated than setting up their older PVRs. When I had it done it took the tech about half a day (gateway plus 3 portals). Plus the gateway is very sensitive to poor connections and wiring faults.

Thanks for the input.

Will the tech also run a new line over to where the second TV (and portal) will be located (currently without cable at that location)?

They can put in a new outlet, but that will be an extra charge. I don't recall how much, but it is fairly reasonable I think.

50$ from what i remember but there are ways around that when you first get your install done.

I assume this is to do with the new Gateway update that came out late last month, but before the update, if I turned my TV on and the last channel it was on was Sportsnet, I could rewind back at least an hour or more... so if I turned the TV on at 10:45 pm and sportsnet connected was on, I'd flip back to 10pm to catch the top stories and avoid all the commercials.

Now after the update, if I turn my TV on and it was last on Sportsnet, I can't rewind to before I actually turned the TV on... ie) it's like it's not pre-recording the last couple of channels it was previously on.

If I actually set something to record, it's fine, there's no issue, but I enjoyed that handly little feature which seems to be turned off now.

Anybody else notice this?

I was under the impression that it depends how long there is 'inactivity' with your gateway/portal.

Say you turn your TV off, and go back and watch say 2 hours later you should still be able to rewind. But if your gateway/portal is inactive for 5 hours you can't go back and rewind because your equipment powered down and wasn't recording? Fully disclosure I am just assuming that is what happened and I have no idea if I am right or what the times would be.

As far as I understand, the Gateway and portals are always on.

Even before the update if it did sense a period of inactivity, whenever I powered on the TV and was at the guide/menu, even if I selected the past 2 or 3 channels I had been on many hours ago I could still rewind. It was like it was always recording in the background the last few channels I'd tuned into regardless of inactivity.

It was actually quite handy and I got pretty used to it... but it apparently has been "fixed" since the update.

Is it just me or has the volume been reduced? I used to find that when I was watching TV through the Gateway/Portals I always had to turn my volume way down compared to other things (DVD player etc.), which was a bit of a nuisance, but as of a few days ago it seems to be at a similar volume to everything else.

No, it's not just you. Both myself and my brother who has the same system noticed this as well. We usually have the tv at 25 but after the update, we have to crank it to almost 40 to get the same volume.

Default Inactivity timeout?

Got the Shaw Gateway system. Last night I had the TV on and everything was fine. This morning I went to the TV and the the TV itself was showing "No signal." This message was not from the portal, rather from the TV itself.

I tried pressing buttons on the portal remote but nothing happened. I pressed buttons on the front of the portal with no effect. Eventually, I pulled the plug on the portal, it reset, and everything went back to normal. I didn't do anything to the gateway.

Is there something I have to do initially after inactivity?

Thanks
ers
