Well, duh. Of course he is not doing that, and I think it is fairly obvious that that is not what I am suggesting.

It would be terrible if it were Colorado though, we do not need that team to get any more young talent. + they still have to sign Rantanen.

I am just now listening to TSN radio. There are rumoured to be upwards of four teams in serious pursuit of Mitchell Marner, including both Montreal and NYI. Montreal is also believed to be setting their sights on Patrik Laine as another RFA target.

You said he will only sign an offer sheet that he knows Calgary would match. Which does not make sense.
He will only sign an offer sheet that he will want to play for. Period.

Honestly if I'm the Jets and the compensation is 4 first round picks I take that every day but being the Habs it will probably be a silly offer like the Carolina one.

While I think an offer sheet for Marner will almost certainly be in the top compensation range, I am MUCH less convinced that Laine will get anything close to that.

I agree, and that does not in any way contradict my original conjecture.

I agree as I simply don't think he's worth that and if the Habs weren't going to give up more than a single first round pick for Aho I can't see them going to the next level and offering two first round picks for a player that isn't as good.

Yeah if I am a GM, Im staying away from him after seeing last season. Not that he wont likely start producing again, but because of the small risk he wont and the giant salary it would take to get him to sign an OS. He is very much a one-dimensional guy (and one of the best at that dimension) but im not sure you can hitch your wagon to those types in the cap world and expect sustained success.

I agree. I don't think they would, but I also don't think that in any way prevents them from signing this particular player.

I can see the Habs giving it another kick at the can with the same offer for Laine in hopes the Jets don't want to or have issues coming up with all the bonus money up front.

I think the Aho deal demonstrates a couple of things here: First, it looks very much to me like players are keen to use these as leverage points to get what they want from their team—this is essentially what Aho did. Second, this means that it won't necessarily require a massive overpayment to convince a player to sign an offer sheet in the first place. Depending upon the player, that could mean signing a deal that is better than what is being offered by the rights-holding team, but one that he also feels confident will be matched.
It will obviously be different for every player, but I think we are seeing a more variable usage of these by players as a negotiating tool.

It will be as futile as the Aho offer.
The Jets dont have the revenue that other teams do, but that does not make then broke.
Chipman has pretty deep freakin pockets.

Can somebody catch me up...why is Chucky “not signing” an offer sheet with another team that’s in excess of what the Flames could match?

The thought here is that he wants to play hockey for the Calgary Flames.

You said he will only sign an offer sheet that he is sure the Flames will match. How is that logical?
Faced with two offer sheets, one for $8 million x 5 years, one for $9 million x 5 years. And he believes Flames will match the former and not the latter.
Please support your argument that he will only sign the first offer sheet.

If someone offers him $10M per season, he’ll sign it.
