I also find the game state makes a huge difference. If one player is way ahead or way behind the accuracy stat seems to be much more forgiving than if the game is close. It's hard to pick a really "bad" move when the game is not close. I played what I considered a pretty poor rapid game yesterday and it gave me an accuracy of 81% which is the highest of my last 10 games or so. I got that high score because I blundered away a queen and a minor piece by move 11 and was so far behind the rest of my play was deemed accurate.

So my son is very interested in chess now that he sees me playing all the time. He's just about to turn 5, so very young to try and learn but I want to give it a go as he's quite excited about it. Any ideas for that age? We've done some of the basic lessons on chess.com about how the pieces move, but I'm not sure it's sinking in for him. We're at the extreme basics like having him remember how all the pieces move and we are no where near things like check, checkmate, promotion, etc.

I’ve asked my 8-year-old grandson if he wants to learn to play chess. He’s really smart (yeah, everyone says that) but so far he says he has no interest. Maybe I need to let him watch his uncle (my son) and I play. Maybe there’s an online tutorial for kids.

They may or may not quite be ready for this yet, but the Calgary Chess Club is putting on beginner chess lessons on Thursday evenings. That's about the extent of what I know about it, but if you have any interest, you can reach out to them to get details.

I would watch this guy with your son.

You can sort his videos from oldest to newest, and just go through lessons. His first lessons touch the very basic(piece placement, piece movement, etc.). Admittedly, I never watched those. His lessons helped me when I started to get deeper into the Pirc. He goes very slowly at first, but each lesson is an excellent step to getting better, and learning some of the patterns.

I'm not sure who needs the distraction at work but the chess champions tour semi finals have a couple of great matches underway.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov is electric. Impossible not to cheer for the 19 year old.

Congrats gvitaly on the tournament win! Very well deserved with a 9-1 record and over 90% accuracy in the finals.
Thanks for a fun tournament all. Was nice to explore some new openings. Also got to say oh no my queen twice.
Happy to play another tournament if others are keen. I know a few people missed out last time.

Thanks it was a grind and a very tough battle against a very good opponent. I thought Willy had me on the ropes with my inaccurate opening in the last game. I definitely didn't feel as though I was playing with 90% accuracy. It's just unlucky Wily blundered the Bishop.
If any one wants to play outside of the tournament I wouldn't mind the practice. Especially in openings I haven't played much like the Stafford, or Alekhine, but I would play just about anything except e4 e5 openings like the Ruy Lopez, or Italian because I haven't played those since I was a kid.

Congratulations!
We should have a “holiday classic” and run something over the next two weeks that hopefully finishes up on January 1?

We could try up a blitz arena one of those days?

I'd give it a shot. Is that the kind of thing where we could set a time and day and basically power through the whole thing? I really haven't played blitz, so I'm not sure about that, and I'll probably just be fodder anyway!

Yeah, I think basically you just play as many games as you can(want) in a set 45 minute period. If you win/ lose faster you can play more. If folks prefer I could switch that to rapid.
The hard part will be picking a time and day that works for everyone ( 6 people).

^I'm not sure where to see that, but I also know that I don't need to for my rankings!
I kind of think we just pick a date and time (maybe during a Flames game?) and hopefully everyone can make it work?

I think I can only see that because I organized the tournaments? Try poking around the tournaments pages in the web broswer.
Well why don't we ask the internationals what time they think would line up easiest ( maybe flames games) and I can put out three options for voting on?

I'm down for an arena over the break. I would prefer rapid (10 minutes?) over blitz, but would bill willing to give it a run for fun
